During the meeting in Azrou, an ex owner of a female Barbary macaque wanted to return a wild caught, captive held female macaque into the "tourist group" in Parc National d'Ifrane. Research assistants from the University of Lincoln managed to prevent this poor macaque from being hurt by this wild group and SPANA and MPC rescued their first Barbary macaque together in Morocco. French customs seize 2 baby Barbary macaques!

On the 12th of August 2011 the French customs seized 2 baby Barbary macaques in France. They were bought in Morocco and smuggled in a cat carrier and their destination was the Netherlands. The 2 very young macaques have been taken to Zoo St Martin la Plaine in France, who have been taking many macaques from the illegal trade since 2009. MPC finds it is unacceptable that again 2 young macaques who were born in the wild now have a future in captivity. We need to keep fighting this!!

On 12 and 13 October, MPC and the Haut Comissariat aux Eaux et Forêts (E&F) organised a meeting to create a conservation strategy for the Barbary macaque in Morocco. We were very honored to work together with E&F on this and we feel that together we have reached a very important point for the conservation of the Barbary macaque.

One of the reasons why this meeting was also of high importance was, that E&F now feel that they have become the owner of Barbary macaque conservation in their country. Until now, many individuals and NGOs/ universities were working in Morocco on but E&F often did not know who was doing what or even did not know the people in the field.

We had around 35 participants, both international and national, who spent 1,5 days in the Ifrane National Park (PNI) headquarters creating a strategy to conserve this unique species. The participants were: SPANA, AESVT, University of Rennes/ Roehampton/ Lincoln/ Meknes/ Fes, BMCRif, Montagne des Singes, Fabrice Cuzin, IFAW, AAP, Institut Scientifique (+GEA), Ifrane National Park, Centre de Recherche Forestière, HCEFLCD and the regional and provincial departments of E&F and MPC.

We are very pleased with the participation of all these people. Everybody was very committed and their expertise was extremely valuable to come to a strategy for the conservation of the BM.

The presentations held by Nelly Ménard (Middle Atlas population), Sian Waters (Rif population), Prof Mouna (Conservation issues) and myself (illegal trade), created a basis for this meeting, with additional information about the High Atlas population (Fabrice Cusin). There was good and bad news. Sian Water’s presentation showed that the BM population in the Rif is doing much better than initially was thought to be. There are still quite a large number of BM in the wild in the north of Morocco and the conservation issues seem much less apparent in the north. This was great news of course.

Nelly Ménard’s presentation however turned out to be very shocking for all of us. Nelly spent 3 years in PNI studying the population in the Middle Atlas and her data confirm the large decline in this population. But what was even more shocking was the disappearance of all the juveniles, infants and a lot of females in one of her focal groups. Her data prove what I have been claiming for a long time: that the illegal poaching in this region is one of the main causes for the decline of this species, and that fighting this illegal trade is one of the most important short term actions that should be taken.

Fabrice Cuzin’s research has shown that also the small fragmented populations in the High Atlas are threatened by human impact and need higher protection to be able to survive in this region.

Although we did not have enough time to reach a clear conservation strategy together, we agreed on a method to proceed soon and have this action plan ready by the end of 2011. I am personally very happy with the outcome and I think we are all together convinced and ready to work hard on saving this species from declining further or even disappearing in the future. Fieldwork in Parc National d'Ifrane

Tomorrow Manon, Kris and Tomos (volunteers and research assistants) and myself will be off to Morocco to spend a month in the field conducting research on the wild Barbary macaque population in the Ifrane National Park. We will collect data on the density of the macaques, the numbers of livestock and also on the degradation and regeneration of the forest area. It will be great to be back in the field. This survey is sponsored by the Dutch Zoo Conservation Fund and is in cooperation with Institut Scientifique in Rabat.

Local team stops poaching of a young macaque!

The fossil sellers, as we call our local friends of MPC in the Ifrane National Park have yet again stopped the poaching of a young macaque last week. August is the peak of the poaching season. Sandra Molesti, a PhD student from the University of Lincoln said:

" I was at the tourist site today to work on my experiment when I heard the monkeys alarm calling and screaming. I ran there and there were two people trying to catch a baby with food and their hands (so not really professional). They have been chased away by the fossil sellers and the people who rent out horses. Apparently they are known and it was not the first time they tried on this group. People told me that they are poor people who catch a monkey on command for usually foreign buyers (e.g. French people etc). Thus apparently they are some demands now so certainly some people are trying to catch infants".
Although this is disturbing news, MPC is extremely happy to see that our local friends are working hard to fight the poachers!

Ignorant people

Lately I have noticed a something that really disturbs me a lot.
Recently we have been active at a few fundraising activities, in which we first explain what MPC stands for and then ask people if they would like to donate a small amount to our foundation or if they want to buy for example merchanidise to support us. But, and this is really shocking, we sometimes don’t even get the chance to explain what we do after we mention the word “Morocco” , because people just react directly by saying “NO” the moment they hear the word Morocco. This shocks me every time this happens….!!

A friend of mine who runs a Nail Beauty parlor in quite an upscale area in Amsterdam tried to raise some funds with her clients for MPC but the moment she mentioned the word Morocco they said no. They said that they did not want to give anything to Moroccans and that they don’t trust that their money will arrive to the place that it should. Even when she explained that it was for the monkeys, they already closed their ears and looked the other way.

I cannot believe this. I think it is appalling that people in Holland are so short sighted. It is very intriguing that people donate millions of Euro’s without thinking twice to a country like Somalia – a country that has been the most anarchistic, criminal shithole (excuse my French) place on earth run by warlords and corrupt idiots who let their people starve to death – and people donate what? 17 million now in Holland? Incredible. Really incredible….

What disturbs me the most is that people obviously have no idea about Morocco (my second home and one of the most beautiful and safest countries I have ever been), about Moroccan people (who are more warm, sharing and caring than most western people I have met in my life) and are incapable of making a difference between the small percentage of nasty Moroccan boys who are causing trouble in our country and millions of good people that we can learn from in our society!
Wow Holland, we used to be so tolerant. Now we are just ignorant!

Popular Moroccan actress Nabila Marhaben ambassador MPC!

The ambitious and very popular Moroccan actress Nabila Marhaben is the new ambassador of the Moroccan Primate Conservation foundation. Nabila was born in Purmerend, in the Netherlands and is currently starring in a tremendously popular sitcom Yak Hna Jirane (The Neighbours) broadcasted throughout the Arab countries. Every episode is viewed by 35 million people and Nabila has millions of Moroccan fans. Recently Nabila and MPC made a visit to the wild Barbary macaques in Cascades d'Ouzoud and also the baby macaques that are for sale in Marrakech. Nabila was extremely touched to spend time with the wild macaques and was very upset to see that so many baby macaques are taken away from their mothers every year to be sold for the illegal pet trade (ed: 300- to 500 a year). "Now I have seen the macaques in the wild, I support the work of MPC even more. These unique endangered animals belong in the wild, in the beautiful nature of Morocco. Monkeys are not pets, they should never end up in cages", says Nabila. MPC is starting a large social media campaign with help of Nabila's popularity this summer to inform the tourists and visitors in Morocco to not buy macaques or other wildlife during their stay in Morocco. July will be a very important month for the Barbary macaques!.
Barcelona ZOO and DEPANA – League for protecting natural heritage, in cooperation with AAP and help of BMCRif and MPC are going to start the Paso del Esrecho Campaign (from 1st to 17th July)
This campaign aims to raise awareness to all passengers in transit to Morocco about the importance of the Barbary macaques in their natural environment, as well as the
unsuitability of keeping these animals as pets. During this month we need volunteers to distribute information and materials to all travelers crossing the Strait of Gibraltar from Algeciras's port.
If you like being in contact with people from different countries and environmental education, Paso del Estrecho Campaign may be a good place, while also doing a very important job for the conservation of Barbary macaques. If you are interested in participating as a volunteer, contact us via c ampanyaestrecho@gmail.com specifying availability and interests. It is necessary to commit a minimum of 5 days, but if you live in the area it can be less.
Accommodation and food is covered, and if you have a car that is welcome. For the public target it is necessary to speak at least English and basic French and/or Arabic, and it is useful if you speak Spanish. COME AND HELP US!

Survey in the EU and new Moroccan partner

MPC is currently conducting a survey that is initiated by MPC and AAP and funded by AAP. The survey is focused on monitoring the the illegal trade in Barbary macaques in the EU over the last 5 years. This will be the 3rd survey of its kind. It is important to keep track of any increase or decrease in the trade to measure the effects of our combined efforts and to keep informing and motivating the authorities in both Europe and Morocco. The Brigitte Bardot Foundaton in France, Depana in Spain and LAV in Italy are assisting us to gather as much data as possible. The final report will be available after the survey is completed.

New Moroccan partner
MPC is very pleased to announce that we have recently started a partnership SPANA (Society for the Protection of ANimals Abroad/ Societé pour la Protection des Animaux et la Nature) in Morocco. For years SPANA has been working in Morocco on the protection of domestic animals in need and they have 10 professional shelters/ educational centers / veterinary facilities throughout Morocco where they help donkeys, mules, horses, cats, dogs and any animal that is in need of care (www.spana.org). They also manage the natural reserve Sidi Boughaba just north of Rabat. Also SPANA is doing outstanding work in the nature education of children in Morocco.

MPC and SPANA are currently working on a plan with the Haut Commissariat aux Eaux et Fôrets to create a solution for confiscated macaques in Morocco. MPC could not wish for a better local partner. More on this soon.

Barbary macaques seized in Spain

During Operation GAPIN, an international enforcement initiative co-ordinated by the World Customs Organization (WCO), more than 100 seizures of wildlife protected by CITES were made during the 2 week transregional operation in January and February to combat the illegal cross-border trade in wildlife and their derivatives.
Also a Barbary macaque was confiscated from a car that was on the ferry arriving from Morocco to Algeciras. This monkey was supposed to be smuggled to France.

Spring is in the air

I am in the plane on my way back from Morocco, where I spent a a few days in the forest. It is birth season again and when I was there quite a few infants have been born already. But the births go all the way through June so hopefully there are many more to follow.

As always, I was very pleased to be in the forest. It is such a beautiful region, especially in spring time. Unfortunately this year there was not much snowfall and that means that it might be a very dry summer this year. That is not good news for the animals that live in the forest. Hopefully this month will still bring some rain.
I am happy to inform you that our local colleagues in the forest, that work with MPC to protect the macaques have done an amazing job in the last year fighting the poachers through the authorities with results that I are beyond my expectations. I will write more on this soon. For MPC it is amazing to see how people, who in the past used to be involved in the trade of macaques have now become macaque guards, who actively work with us and hopefully in the future will make our work unnecessary. I am so very proud of this team, with emphasis on one person in particular who I will not name for safety reasons. I am convinced that we will see the results of their efforts this year.
There are so many exciting things happening at the moment, not just for the macaques but also for MPC. So keep an eye on the website or this blog, there’s some good news coming up!

La Policía Local de La Línea de la Concepción y el Servicio de Protección de la Naturaleza (Seprona) de la Guardia Civil han procedido a la retirada de un primate que tenían como mascota una familia en una vivienda de la localidad linense.

Según ha indicado el Ayuntamiento de La Línea en un comunicado, los hechos tuvieron lugar después de que en las dependencias de la Policía Local se tuviese conocimiento, mediante denuncia de vecinos, de que en un domicilio una familia tenía un primate adoptado como mascota.

Tras personarse los agentes de ambos cuerpos en el domicilio y comprobar la veracidad de lo comunicado, se contactó con la propietaria de la vivienda, quien tras ser informada sobre los extremos recogidos en el Decreto 42/2008, de 12 de febrero, por el que se regula la tenencia de animales potencialmente peligrosos en la comunidad autónoma de Andalucía, y la prohibición de tener como mascotas animales salvajes, optó por donarlo a un zoológico próximo a la zona, tras sugerencia de los agentes.

Así, los miembros del Seprona aportaron los medios necesarios para trasladar al animal, que corresponde exactamente a la especie macaca sylvanus, también llamada mono de berbería y mona rabona.

Según señalan, se trata de una especie de primate catarrino de la familia cercopithecidae. Es el único primate, aparte del hombre, que puede encontrarse actualmente en libertad en Europa, y el único miembro del género macaca que vive fuera de Asia.

From disappointment to positive news....!!

I have recently been in Morocco and started my trip in the field where i met up with Chris Young and his team and his supervisor Dr. Majolo (University of Lincoln) to discuss possible plans together.
I spent a day alone with a wild group and that completely lifted my spirits and took away my disappointment from before. Also because i received good news from the field and our colleagues about a small increase of the macaque density in the national park, and a decrease in numbers of poached infants and numbers of goats. The poaching data comes from our local friends that are in the forest on a daily basis who have slowly become not only a valuable source of information but also are becoming "monkey guards". These local people have managed to stop a poaching group this summer by alerting the authorities. Fantastic!! Also the management team of the national park of Eaux et Forêts are in positive spirits and seem very motivated to continue to work with us and conserve this beautiful area.

Last but not least, we have some positive news about a new option for creating a solution for confiscated macaques in Morocco.

Disappointment!

As we mention on the MPC website, we had to cancel the building plans of the sanctuary. This was mainly due to problems with our future partner. We had already invested money and a lot of time and effort in this project and I even had a team of builders ready to go (one was already in the plane!!) when we heard about last minute problems that turned out to be problems forever.
As you can imagine I was very disappointed and to be honest this set back even made me doubt if I still want to continue this battle. I have been working on the conservation of the Barbary macaque for 7 years and i have provided (with other scientists) data to prove how bad the situation of the macaques is and even today, after all our efforts, we still don´t feel supported by the Moroccan government and even the EU countries that are involved in the trade. Can you believe this? In the meantime the Barbary macaque has been officially classified as `Endagered` and less and less macaques are in the forest but still nobody is doing ANYTHING about this.

Maybe when they are all gone the authorities will understand the impact of their lack of support and actions. But then it is too late.

Research illegal wildlife trade in Rif mountains

MPC has recently conducted field research on the illegal trade in wildlife in the north of Morocco, a region that has never been surveyed before. We found some very interesting data, but most important is that the trade in macaques is much smaller than in the Middle Atlas. More news to follow. This survey was funded by Apenheul (Apenheul Primate Conservation Trust).

Poaching season started!!

MPC's informant contacted us last week telling us that the poaching has started in the cedar forest since 2 weeks and that at least 8 infants have already been captured. This is very disturbing news. We have contacted the local authorities and have asked them to take action against these poachers as soon as possible.
The reason why the poaching takes place now is that the infants are the right age now to capture and sell, and also because it's rammadan which means that there is less control in the national park.

Education project in Spain

The educational project in Spain was a large success. Els and a team of Spanish and Dutch volunteers managed to hand out 17300 sun screens and information leaflets to Moroccan people traveling to Morocco this summer. The choice for sun screens turned out really well, it was boiling hot in Spain in this time and while people had to wait in the blasting sun for their ferry they greatfully used the screens. Many moments the port of Algeciras was coloured with up to 50 cars that were using the screens. People used the time to wait to read the leaflets and to talk with us. At least 2 people admitted that they were planning on buying a macaque and we managed to persuade them not to. But mainly the reactions were that people were surprised that there are so little Barbary macaques left in the wild. We got a great deal of support from the people, thanking us for caring about the nature of Morocco and wondering why their government was doing so little to stop this trade. It was a very heavy project for all of us, as it was often towards 40 degrees celsius and we were working very long hours but the main problem was the fact that the port authorities denied us our authorisation to do this work undisturbed, whereas the customs and the Guardia Civil and all other staff in the port were extremely supportive and helped us a lot. This meant that we had to work "illegally" in the port and that caused us a lot of problems, but we kept bouncing back and i think we can be proud of the results considering the circumstances.
On the first location we had much more time to talk with people, which sometimes was a challenge when it came to languages but we did it. The reactions of most people was so very positive, people were thanking us for caring about Morocco and its nature, and were very open about what they knew about the illegal wildlife trade. Obviously we reached much less cars than in the south, but it was very rewarding work. And even I can now say a few sentences in Spanish.....
It was very hot during the whole period, which made the work quite tiring and we also ended up in the middle of a twister at one point, with chairs and sun screens flying through the air. Interesting!

The second location was a bigger challenge. We worked in both Tarifa and Algeciras port. I find it incredible how many different kinds of uniforms and authorities there are in Spain. We had to deal with them all, and most were very supportive, except for the port police, or better Policia Portuaria (PP). We by now know them all.... ;-)
The authorities in Tarifa port were ok, they let us do our work, although they couldn't make up their minds where they would let us work so we were sometimes in the middle of the road, holding up traffic, until the local police sent us to the port, who sent us back again.....and so forth. The locals in Tarifa were quite a challenge too.....and could be quite nasty to us if we refused to give them a sun screen, explaining that it was meant for people travelling to Morocco. In the end we gave them a few....but of course most were not expecting a Moroccan flag.....

Algeciras however was the real challenge. This is the main port where Moroccans take the ferry to Morocco in the summer and some weekends up to 5000 cars pass there. Perfect for us! We applied for authorisation which was denied. We were however not willing to give up because our work was also helping the port to stop the illegal flow of macaques coming in. The customs and Guardia Civil were very supportive and everybody else working in the port were helping us really much, even handing out the flyers and screens. For 12 days we played cat and mouse with the PP, constantly changing our location, outfits, hairdo, strategy...it worked well, although we got kicked out many times. We managed to not be caught on the busiest weekend as we chose a new location where they didn't expect us, and we were wearing the same bright yellow jackets as the traffic controllers. It was hilarious, at one point i was handing out screens to cars only 5 meters from the police, without them noticing.
The last Sunday however they found us again and this time they were very clear. Leave and don't come back or else you will get arrested. We gave up this location then.
I still don't understand why they didn't just give us permission. There were people with permission promoting a Moroccan phone company.....and we were not doing any publicity. In fact, we were even helping the port. To be fair, the PP was very lenient on us considering the fact that we ignored their orders over and over again. So in that way we should be greatful.

I had a bunch of amazing volunteers, thank you so much Manon, Kris, Esther, Rianne, Carolien, Erwin, Maria and Michael!! Without you guys i could never have done this and it was also good to have you around when my chaotic head stopped working. But most of all I am so proud of the bunch that kept fighting the port police with me, even if there were risks to that and brought this project to such amazing end. It was hard work but fun!! Monkey rebels you are, all of you!

Volunteers needed in Spain this summer!

This year AAP and MPC are repeating the successful educational project that we organised in 2007, educating in Europe residing Moroccans on their way to Morocco this summer not to buy Barbary macaques by handing out flyers at popular resting areas and parking places along the highways in Spain. We need volunteers to help us flyer between July 10 and July 20 in area of Valdepeñas (south of Madrid, not so far from Cordoba) and between 21 July and August 4 near Algeciras (south where the ferry embarks). We will provide accommodation and food, and transport from acomodation to the working areas. I you have your own car, that would be even better! A minimal volunteer period of 5 days is requested, but if you live in the neighbourhood of the locations less is possible.
Apart from the fact that you will be doing really important work, it will also be fun! If you like being in contact with people, educating people and speak at least English and one of the following languages (French, Arabic, Dutch, Spanish) please come and help us!! MPC at IPPL in USA and Oxford

Recently MPC received a generous fund for the design and building of the first enclosure for a sanctuary for Barbary macaques in Morocco. Every 2 years, IPPL organises a meeting for the members of IPPL. People rom projects around the world come to this meeting to tell the members where their donations are being spent on. It was an honour to meet the members and to see Shrileys gibbons in Summerville. Also meeting many colleagues from around the globe who are fighting to preserve primates and their natural habitats was amazing. Thank you IPPL and het members for helping us all to do this! During the conference in Oxford at the Oxford Brookes University, the 10th anniversary of the MSc Primate Conservation where Els studied, Els won the award for the best student presentation. It was a great conference and it was very nice to be back in good old Oxford!

Japan dilemma

Dear readers,

I have dilemma and would like to hear your opinions. This year, the International Primatological Society meeting (IPS) is in Japan. Now most of you may know that Japan is one of the worst countries in the world when it comes to conservation, especially marine life. Japan still hunts whales, is the country that has just made sure the Bluefin Tuna is going extinct at the CITES meeting and after seeing the movie The Cove, i pretty much decided never ever to go to Japan. But then, for my work, for the macaques, and for the foundation, it would be very good if i go to this meeting.
My very personal opinion is that i think many more IPS attandants should make a statement about this. Why would we give Japan the chance to show that they are serious about conserving our natural world when at the same time they don't care whatsoever about the fact that they are the number 1 country that is causing many fish species to go extinct and have absolutely no respect for animal welfare???

I won the Future for Nature award 2010!

By now, most of you will know that I won the Future for Nature award 2010. I have known this for a little while, but of course this had to stay a secret.
Last Friday was the award ceremony and I have been working really hard before this day to make my presentations (I had to do an extra one for the beneficiaries of Burgers Zoo (one of the big sponsors and the venue of the award day)) and to be prepared for press and even chosing my outfit was a challenge ;-)
I can say that it was one of the most amazing days of my life. The other 2 winners, Jean Thomas from Australia(and her husband Jim...who deserves all credits too) who fight for the Tenkile Tree kangaroo in Papua New Guinea and Alberto Campos from Brazille who fights for the survival of 2 very special bird species and the manatee, were super!! I very much enjoyed meeting them and was proud to share the stage with them.

I am still in a kind of state of shock, the whole event was just so beautiful and inspiring. It was an incredible honour for me too meet Angela Cropper from UNEP but especially Saba Douglas Hamilton. I am very greatful to her for her support and encouragement on that day and her incredible words when she introduced me on stage.

My presentation went really well, I was nervous until the moment i had to get on stage, but when i was there, I felt really confident and enjoyed it a lot.

I can't describe how much i appreciate Future for Nature for doing this work and supporting young conservationists in their battles. It is not only the financial support, all though 50.000 Euro is an incredible amount, but it is also the support and motivation you get and feel by winning this award.

I am more motivated than ever to help the Barbary macaques now and i hope many of you will support me and MPC to do this.
I have been doing a lot of media lately and hope many people out there will spread the word and help us to make this planet a better place for the future generations!

Visit to South Africa

Recently Hanneke van Ormondt and I have visited CARE, a chacma baboon sanctuary in South Africa, run by Rita Miljo and some dedicated volunteers and staff. We also visited the Vervet foundation that shelters vervet monkeys and is run by David and Josie Du Toit.

The reason for this visit was for me to learn from both centers how to run a sanctuary for primates under often difficult circumstances in Africa. Also at CARE I got ideas for the first enclosure that we are going to build for Barbary macaques in Morocco. Both sanctuaries have plans or have already reintroduced their groups back to the wild, with success, and that is something we might be doing in the future in Morocco too.

I was very impressed with both sanctuaries. CARE is located along the Olifants river near Kruger national park and is a trully magical and wild place, where so many baboons, that until recently were considered vermin, are cared for with so much love. Rita and her team were extremely welcoming and I thank Rita so very much for her time and sharing all the information with me.

The Vervet foundation shelters many vervet monkeys that also come from the pet trade or are found in need of help and although it is set up totally different than CARE, due to the difference in species, I was also impressed by the huge enclosures and the dedication to sheltering this species. I am greatful to David and Josie for their time and information.

Dear blog readers, I am happy to inform you that MPC, our foundation is officially up and running with a new board and many supporters. We are still waiting to get an official "ANBI" status, that will provide Dutch beneficiaries to be able to donate money with a tax benefit. I will inform you all when it is arranged. Many people are waiting and impatient for this moment and we thank you so much for this enthousiasm, patience and support! Every penny and/ or effort you give us is worth so much.

On the downside, I am quite disappointed in something that has been going on recently. I have been in contact with a private person who had an adult female macaque as her pet, and was residing in Morocco. As a little background story, this person has a lot of love for her pet/ "friend" and came to me for soem advice and help. I will not go into details, out of respect for this person, but in the end this person chose to travel to Europe by ferry. When arrived in Europe the macaque was immediately confiscated at the border. This is the law. The macaque is doing well.

Nothing special you might think? For me it is unbelievable that a person can board a ferry openly in Morocco with an adult (large!) female macaque without any problems. I am obviously aware that many macaques are smuggled into Europe.....but openly transported???

While I was in Morocco I learned that the local authorities of Azrou did a raid at the house of the biggest catcher/ poacher of macaques last month. This is very good news because I have been pushing for this for years now. Unfortunately the word probably reached the catcher and they found nothing, but the fact that this finally happened is fantastic and I am sure that this man will feel the pressure now and knows that the authorities are on his back. Well done!!

Also I heard that this year the catchers have started killing females whilst catching the infants. Until now I could never confirm this and most infants are being captured without any harm to the females. I am very worried about this news and wonder what brings this change in methods. Maybe the females are becoming more protective as a result of the heavy poaching.

When we did the training for the students of Mohammed V University in Rabat in April, we gave boxes of flyers to the National Park authorities to have them handed out to tourists in the park. I was in the forest last week and the fossil sellers, my friends and informants told me that they had spent the whole summer handing out flyers to passing tousrists. I am really happy with this and it seems like the national park staff has considerably changed their attitude towards macaque conservation since we had the workshop there last year november.

A group of organisations from Spain and Holland and colleagues working in the Rif have joined hands and are now working together on conservation and tackling the illegal trade in Barbary macaques. The group is called: Grupo de Trabajo para la Conservacion del Macaco de Berberia.

Last but not least, some sad news. A colleague scientists Nelly Menard has spent the last years doing a big survey in the Middle Atlas on the status of the Barbary macaque. Her results were presented recently and they confirm what Andrea Camperio Ciani and I have been claiming for years: the Barbary macaque population in the Middle Atlas is in danger of becoming extinct in 10 years time. Some areas have only 7 individuals per km2 left and there are not more than 3000 macaques left in the forest. It's time to stop focusing on research and take action if we want to preserve this species.

Training NGOs and Customs

I am back from the training we gave to the Moroccan NGOs and customs. I have very mixed feelings about it, but let me start by complimenting WWF MedPo, SSN and Charles Mackay from Heathrow airport for the really great week! It has not been easy to arrange this and I think it went very well.
The NGO attendees were a really inspiring group of people and it is great to know that there are people like this in Morocco fighting for the nature of their country. It also however has become very clear that they do not have a lot of support and cooperation with the governments and that Morocco is far from being a democratic country in which things can be said out loud in press or in person. This personally irritated me as I believe that when at least the cards are on the tabel progress is possible. Anyway, I will not go into too much detail and i am glad that some NGO representatives had the chance to sit at one table with a government official. I hope MPC can work together with the Moroccan NGOs from this point onwards.

The customs training was next. There were customs officers from all over the country, and that was good, although I would have like to have seen more officers from the hotspots Tanger and Ceuta. This was the first time since Morocco signed the CITES treaty in 1976 that a CITES training took place. I think many officers never had even seen a CITES permit in their life and maybe even heard about the treaty. Also, this was the first time ever that the Ministry of Forestry and Water/ CITES authorities and the Customs were in one room together talking about issues that overlap their work field!! We closed the gap with this training, but it shows how incredibly far behind Morocco is when it comes to CITES implementation and enforcement! But let's keep it positive, this was a start and I think good things will come from it. The customs officers were enthousiastic and what I really appreciaited was the fact that they admitted the fact that there is an illegal trade in Barbary macaques to Europe, that it is a big problem (as opposed to some colleagues in Morocco....) and some even claim that my estimation of 300 infants being smuggled out of Morocco annually is an underestimation. They claim that it is probably 400 to 500 macaques.

My demonstration on how to handle Barbary macaques when confiscated was a big success and people were very amused to see me struggle with a stuffed monkey on the floor. They found the information very interesting. WWF/ SSN and AAP donated a transport cage, a catching bag and handling gloves to the customs.

I just came back from travelling through India for a month and it is taking me quite a lot of time to adjust to being back in Europe. India has made a very big impression on me, not only because of the very cheecky monkeys that live there, but the people, the scenery and spirituality of the country. In some ways India reminded me of Morocco a lot, but in other ways I realised that Morocco is much more developed over the last years.

I am off to Morocco tomorrow where i will be part of a training that the Moroccan authorities, SSN and WWF MedPo have organised. The first days will be for the Moroccan NGOs and how they can contribute to putting a halt to the illegal trade. The last 3 days will be for the Moroccan customs officers. We will train them on Moroccan legislation and CITES, on Barbary macaque biology and the illegal trade and how to handle moneys, what to do with them when they confiscate a monkey etc. I am very excited about this week. It is the first time this will ever take place in Morocco and I hope it all goes well. I am sure it's going to be a challenge as well.
So tomorrow I set off with a large catching net donated by AAP (thank you!!) and a stuffed animal (monkey style...) to do a demonstration....I will make sure to get some pictures so you can all have a laugh. I am looking forward to being in Morocco again, to get new ideas and new plans and hopefully to achieve a lot as well with my colleagues from Morocco, America and Italy!

Oh, by the way, I have been nominated for the Future for Nature award 2010 again, and fingers crossed this time, I might be amongst the 3 winners!!! But already the 2 nominations is an acknowledgement to my efforts and I am very happy about it!

Holiday season

A friend of mine just came back from Morocco only 2 weeks ago and was in Tanger where he found many infant Barbary macaques for sale. They were even offering them to drivers alomg the road between Ceuta and Tanger. I notified the authorities and hope they will do something about it soon.

The holiday season has started again and many Moroccan families living in Europe are on their way or have already arrived in Morocco for their annual trip to visit family and their home country.

Unfortunately this means that right at this very moment,many Barbary macaque infants born since May this year are being captured from the wild, mainly in the Middle Atlas region, to be transported to the markets in the cities and to be sold to tourists.
These macaques will be facing 30 hour drives in 40-50 degrees celsius heat, smuggled accross borders and often ending up either ill or dead on arrival. The ones that survive face an unnatural life in small homes of people in cities like Paris, and later dumped on the streets and when they are lucky they end up in one of the European sanctuaries.Some of them however are euthanised in France due to lack of shelter in the overstocked sanctuaries.

Sad to say, the first infant wild caught Barbary macaque of only 2 months old has already arrived on the premises of AAP, Sanctuary for exotic animals in Holland last week (5/8) and was bought by tourists thinking they did the right thing. This infant is now facing a life in captivity, when he was running around in the forest only 1 month ago. There are probably many more to follow.

We have established our first goals and will be mainly focusing on the CITES uplisting of the Barbary macaque from Appendix II to Appendix I. This CoP will take place in Qatar in March 2010, and hopefully MPC will accomplish this uplisting together with other NGO's and the Moroccan and Algerian governments.

The field worker: a non priority species?

There are many people in this world who dedicate their life to saving specific species or habitats. These are brave people. People in the field. People who make a difference. Who set aside their academic ambitions or combine the efforts to achieve their actual goal. And their dream.

Often these brave people work under very hard circumstances, earn very little money and give up a stability and safety, because they know, that it they don’t persist, probably nobody will care enough, so this is the price they pay.

These people, like many of my friends, are the people who make a difference. Who know the field, who know their subjects, who know the local situation, the status and the prospect. Little efforts have large impacts, and they can only be achieved by people who are actually IN the field doing the work.

Then why, I wonder, are exactly these people always struggling to get by? Very low incomes, uncertainty on future work, often no base to live etc. Are these people not doing 80% more effective work than NGO employees who travel around the world to ridiculously expensive workshops and conferences, flying business class only to TALK about conservation instead of taking ACTION?

The cost of one conference could probably provide one field worker with a 5-10 year salary. But in stead, the field worker is writing funding proposals to every fund they can find, just to make sure that they can continue their very important work, while others are sipping champagne at the opening ceremony of yet another conference in Barbardos!

It makes me angry. And disappointed, that the field worker seems to be a forgotten species, and many important conservation decisions (and funding decisions!) are made by conference lovers who have never set a foot in the field. Maybe we need a conservation programme for the field workers. Status Endangered!

Recently one of the larger global conservation NGO’s, of whom I will not mention the name, expressed an opinion that shocked me. I will not go into details, but literally they said that the Barbary macaque is in their eyes “not a priority species”.

WHAT?

Indeed, the fact that there are only around 3000 macaques left in the wild in Morocco, maybe 3500 in the world, and that the species is declining with a rate so fast that extinction is not so far away, the fact that they recently shifted the species to status “endangered” , the only primate in North Africa, the only primate North of the Sahara, the only macaque outside of Asia…..and there are LESS Barbary macaques than Sumatran orangutans left……..is not enough to call them a priority species??????

Maybe this NGO should organise a workshop in Morocco, not in luxury, but in the field, to see what the reality is. The money of their beneficiaries would be much better spent!

It has been a very wet and cold winter in Morocco. I am back in the field with the WWF and GEA team, giving a training for the students of the Mohammed V University in Rabat (Faculty of Science) and students from the Royal Forestry Institute. The training is on Barbary macaque conservation.
It is such a pleasure to work with this group of young, motivated and smart students. They are the future of Morocco’s environmental conservation and what a team! After the theoretical part in Rabat, we have arrived in the Middle Atlas and are doing the practical training now. The students are learning about the degradation of the forest, the human impact, macaque biology and the methodology of how to do research in the field, by walking transects. The forest is currently extremely green, as it has rained a lot. There are even some patches of snow left. In November, when we visited one of the water sources that is isolated for livestock, there was barely water in it. Now the well is filled with water (see pictures). We have not seen many monkeys, although the groups that live in close proximity of the fossil sellers are doing well and have their first infants.
I myself have been mainly lecturing about the illegal trade. As I mentioned before, the fossil sellers have always worked with me, provided me with information about capturers. They want to protect the monkeys, as their income relies on tourists and the tourists will stop when the monkeys are there. Therefore, in cooperation with the National Park staff, we have decided that the fossil sellers are going to play an important role in stopping this trade by handing out flyers to tourists this summer. The students started doing this yesterday. This is a great achievement. Also a local NGO on environmental education (AESVT) will hand out flyers and commence an educational project for the local school children.
It is always inspiring to be in the field. I feel lately though that we are on the right track. The management of the National Park are finally starting to realize that the need for protection of this unique area is high, and together we are achieving so much. I am honoured to work together with GEA, Institut Scientifique and AESVT. We form a team of experts on every part of Barbary macaque conservation and strongly believe that we are heading for some great successes in the next year. Hopefully we can find funding for all the great plans we have so we can continue fighting for the survival of the Barbary macaque and its habitat.

I have been informed that I am not one of the 3 award winners unfortunately. But I am sure there were better candidates and I will try next year again.
Honestly it would have given me the financial break that I have been longing for for a while now. It has become hard to keep myself involved in the Barbary macaque project when there is no funding available. But hopefully MPC will bring a change to that situation.
The plan is that MPC will be up and running in May this year. You should however know that in the meantime we are not sitting around doing nothing.

I will fly to Morocco at the beginning of April to participate again in a training organised by GEA and WWF MedPo for the students of the forestry school in Salé and for the Mohammed V university students. I will train them in the illegal trade issues. We will also take them into the field again, just like we did with the group in November.

Also, at the beginning of May, I will return to Morocco for SSN. SSN is working on the implementation of CITES in Morocco and, like we have done before with the Spanish customs, we will train the Moroccan customs as well.

Future for Nature Award

I am happy to tell you all that i have been nominated for the Future for Nature award. This award is handed out to people that have achieved specific goals in species conservation and aims to stimulate these individuals to continue their work for the future. I am honoured that I am amongst the last 12 candidates, of which 3 will be awarded, out of 148 people around the world of 56 countries.
Obviously I am not expecting to win this award as I have many many colleagues around the world who deserve this at least as much as i do, but already the acknowledgement for being amongst the last 12 candidates for me is an honour. And i want to thank all the involved people of mainly AAP, Sanctuary for exotic animals and IUCN The Netherlands (and individually David van Gennep, Rikkert Reijnen, Willem ferwerda, Carl Konigel and last but not least Mohamed Mouna) for their support in the past and for making it possible that i achieved what i did until now. Without their financial, professional and individual support, i would not have been able to reach this point.

Moroccan Primate Conservation (MPC)

I am working on setting up a foundation called Moroccan Primate Conservation (MPC). This foundation will focus mainly on putting a halt to the illegal trade in the Barbary macaque, but will aim at the conservation of the cedar forest and all habitats in Morocco as well.

I will keep you informed on the progress on this blog and hope to raise funds so we can start some highly needed actions in 2009, such as the flyer project in the Moroccan ports and the start of setting up a rescue and reintroduction centre in Morocco.

In November GEA and WWF MedPO organised a training for local NGO's and employees of the forestry department in Azrou, Morocco. This team organised a similar training in 2003 and this year we noticed a very positive change within this group of people when it comes to attitude towards Barbary macaque conservation.

In 2003 the general idea was that the macaques were in too large numbers and were killing the forest. But this year, the group acknowledged that the Barbary macaque is not doing well at all, and that the forest needs immediate protection for it to survive. Gea's team (Camperio Ciani) had just spent 2 months in the field conducting new surveys and their data are shocking. Only 2500 left in the Middle Atlas. This is shocking news.

I myself did a lecture on the illegal trade and asked the team to provide me with solutions, which they actively did.

We went into the field twice, first to provide the group with general information and a second day to teach them how to do transects.

It was a very succesful training to my opinion and i applaud Gea's team for their accomplishment. It is trully time for action now. We cannot wait much longer, this species will be wiped out of Morocco very soon if we don't take action now.

International Primatological Society meeting

Two weeks ago I attended the IPS meeting in Edinburgh, where i also gave a presentation on the work we have been doing lately and on the status of the Barbary macaque. It was nice to finally meet my colleague Sian Waters who works on Barbary macaques in the Rif mountains, and it made me realise that I am lucky that I work in a more accessible area than she does. Apparently Sian's situation is a lot harder as "her" macaques are very wary of people and hard to spot, and the cliffs and mountains prevent her from being able to do easy census work.

It was great seeing lots of my colleagues again, and to be inspired by people around the world who are doing similar work in different primate species. I was happy I was there to inform my colleagues that the Barbary macaque is also not doing well. To make a concerning comparison: there are 6500 Sumatran Orangutans left in the wild; this is more than Barbary macaques in Morocco. Not many people realise that this species is becoming endangered. This is mainly due to the fact that it should not be necessary. The Barbary macaque is a strong and adaptable species, but when the threats and pressure keep continuing, even this species cannot cope.

Soon my next publication on the status of the Barbary macaque in the Middle Atlas will be published in Oryx. We will try and make a press statement when this happens, to inform the public.

I visited the forest 2 weeks ago and saw the new born babies. I always get a mixed feeling when i see them every year, knowing that part of them will end up in the illegal trade and live a life in captivity. Although we are taking measures, both in Morocco and in Europe, the problem is still there. Only last month custom officials in Spain informed one of our team that Barbary macaque trade is still very large, and that national laws are not sufficient to punish the people involved in the trade. Outside Madrid a trader was "caught" with many macaques for sale, but the national legislation was so weak that the trader coud continue his activities. Of course we are all working hard to change this.

I am currently working on a new paper to publish my field work I did on the densities of the macaque population in the Middle Atlas. Although the data are 2,5 years old, it is an important paper that shows the drastic decline in the Barbary macaque population.
I hope it will be published soon. In October this year the Barbary macaque will go from the status Vulnerable to the status Endangered on the IUCN Red List. This is a sad occasion. We have all failed to sufficiently protect this species from this fate, despite the concerns that have been raised 3 decades ago, when the species was already declining in numbers.

I know this sounds dramatic, and we should not give up, but I wish sometimes that we could also hear a success story when it comes to the protection of our natural world around us.

On the bright side, and this may sound as a contradiction, the status Endangered can also be positive for the Barbary macaque. Once a species is endangered, more attention will go towards the species and more funds to conserve it. It is sad, but true.

In March I was back in Morocco after a long time. It was fantastic to be back and i don't think I have ever seen Morocco as green as it was now.
I spent my time catching up with things that had happened and also working on my feasibility study. I visited 2 areas that are potential regions to reintroduce the macaques in the future. It was a great trip and I can't wait to be back in May. At the moment I am in Chicago where I attended a meeting on Wildlife reintroductions. That was very useful and it was nice to see how many reintroductions have been very successful in the world.

Something different:

Please note that they made a huge mistake assuming that I am a man. And a Dr. I am flattered! But I think the journalist was confused and thought I was my father!

One point that the article did not mention, and to my opinion is one of the most important arguments against culling is the fact that we are talking about an endangered species. The macaque meets all the criteria for the status endangered on the Red List and will be classified as such next year. The culling of an endangered species is obviously unacceptable!

Op de markt in Tanger vond ik nadat ik een tip had gekregen deze aap, die zak in een vogekooitje en werd te koop aangeboden. Helaas is dit nog overal normaal en wordt er weinig aan gedaan. Inmiddels is deze aap in beslag genomen door mijn aangifte en naar Rabat Zoo verhuisd waar hij in een groter verblijf mag leven met soortgenoten. Maar goed, het diertje had natuurlijk in het bos moeten blijven waar het thuishoort!

At the market in Tanger I found this little monkey in a bird cage after somebody told me about it. It was for sale. Unfortunately this is still very common in Morocco and not much is being done about it. This little monkey has been confiscated after I warned the authorities and has been moved to Rabat Zoo where he can live his life in a larger cage with other monkeys. But needless to say, this monkey should have stayed in the forest where it belongs!

Finished flyer project

De afgelopen 3 weken hebben we geflyerd in Tanger en we hebben in totaal, inclusief Algeciras 50.000 flyers uitgedeeld, gemiddeld 2250 per dag!. Het was een project met vele horten en stoten, ivm autorisatitie om op de havens te gaan staan, maar uiteindelijk kunnen we het een succes noemen. De reacties van de ontvangers waren erg positief, men vond de inhoud ook erg interessant. We hebben nog in de krant gestaan en velen in de omgeving van de haven in Tanger zijn nu op de hoogte van onze doelstelling. Met veel dank aan mijn team bestaande uit Hajar, Sana, Sarah, Ismael, Mohammed 2x en Omar! We hebben met zijn allen keihard gewerkt, in de hitte, uitlaatgassen en soms vervelende omstandigheden met autoriteiten.

The last 3 weeks we have handing out flyers in Tanger and we have distributed 50.000 flyers including Algeciras. About 2250 a day! The project did not always go smoothly, we had some problems with the customs, autorities and authorisation to be able to work in the ports, but in the end we can say it was a great success! The people who received flyers weren very positive and found the flyer very informative. We even made the local paper and a lot of people in the neighbourhood of the port in Tanger now are informed of our objectives. Many thanks to my team consisting of Hajar, Sana, Sarah, Ismael, Mohammed 2x and Omar. We worked very hard in the heat, car fumes and sometimes very unpleasant situations with the authroities!

Tanger Flyer

We zijn begonnen met het flyerproject in Tanger en het gaat goed. Ik werk met een aantal meiden die vakantie hebben en dat blijkt gunstig te werken want men vraagt zich allemaal af wat die meiden in oranje t-shirts doen en nemen graag een folder aan. Het is heel moeilijk geweest om autorisatie te regelen om in de haven te flyeren, want Marokko heeft op het moment veiligheidsniveau 3 op het gebied van terrorisme dus men neemt geen risico's. Maar de autoriteiten zijn allemaal steunend voor ons project en we mogen tot de 2e week van augustus werken in de haven.

We have started our flyer project in Tanger and it is going well. I am working with girls, which turns out to be a very good idea, because people are curious what we are doing there and take the flyers. It has been a very hard struggle to get authorisation to do this in the port, because Morocco is on security level III for terrorism at the moment and so they take no risks. But the authorities are very supportive to our project and have given us authorisation to do so untill the 2nd week of august.

Algeria, our colleagues

I am happy to inform you that our colleagues in Algeria havejust started a similar project for education on and protection of the Barbary macaque. They have, in collaboration with La Montagne des Singes in France developed a flyer and other educational material to hand out to local people in the areas where the Barbary macaque still exists. The problems with the macaques in Algeria are a bit different. The trade is more oon national level, although international trade does exist, but not in the same proportions as the Moroccan trade.
The message to the local people and all people targeted is: do not buy macaques, do not feed them, the macaque is a protected species both national and international and we should protect them and their habitat. Today Algeria informed me that they will also start targetting people in the ports coming on holiday to Algeria. Also we have been given full support to uplist the species to Appendix I for the next CITES CoP. It is very good to know that now in both the ranging countries of the Barbary macaque we are working hard to protect this unique and threatened species.

Heat, fumes, flyers and many cars!

We hebben afgelopen weekend zo’n 20.000 flyers uitgedeeld aan de toeristen die de boot in Algeciras hebben genomen naar Marokko. De actie verliep goed, met veel dank aan de havenautoriteiten van Algeciras, mijn Spaanse collega Alberto Diez, mijn Nederlandse collega Jenny Adames, de drukker in Spanje en de enorme hulp van het lokale honden en kattenasiel in Algeciras. We gaan nu proberen de actie in Tanger te continueren.

This past weekend we have distributed about 20.000 flyers to tourists crossing from Algeciras to Morocco. It all went very well with thanks to the harbour authorities in Algeciras, my Spanish colleague Alberto Diez, my Dutch colleague Jenny Adames and the incredible help from the local dog and cat shelter in Algeciras. We will try and continue this operation in Tanger now.

Tanger en Algeciras

Op dit moment ben ik in Tanger om de grootschalige voorlichtingsactie in de havens op touw te zetten. De folders zijn gedrukt en liggen klaar in Algeciras. We gaan het komende weekend daar met een team folders uitdelen en vanaf volgende week in Tanger. Ik zal jullie de details besparen maar het is wel een ramp om deze dingen te regelen hier. Overal moeten brieven, faxen, autorisatie etc etc voor komen. Maar goed, volhouden. We werken nu samen met Frank Faycal Wyllinck van Stichting Fomanef- iemand die al jaren in Marokko woont en voor ons een enorme hulp is.

De komende weken krijgen de honderdduizenden toeristen die Marokko inkomen een folder en hopelijk levert het op wat we beogen; minder aankoopvan apen.

Training douane SP

Afgelopen week hebben we in Spanje in het kader van het project een CITES training georganiseerd voor de douaniers van de havens van Algeciras, Malaga, Tarifa, Estapona ev. Dit was erg succesvol. Men was erg geineteresseerd en het was voor bijna allen de eerste keer dat zij uberhaupt iets extras leerden over CITES en identificatie van soorten. Ook op het gebied van identificatie van soorten/ planten/ onderdelen en handhaving, boetes etc. Het bleek ook erg motiverend voor de groep.

Delegaties naar AAP

Tijdens de CITES conferentie in Den Haag hebben we de Algerijnse, Marokkaanse en Tunesische delegaties uitgenodigd om naar Stichting AAP te komen, om een beeld te geven van de problemen die wij tegenkomen met betrekking tot de berberaap. Allen waren erg onder de indruk van de werkzaamheden van AAP en hopelijk nu extra gemotiveerd om een einde te maken aan de illegale handel van de soort.

During the CITES meeting, which was in The Hague, we invited the Algerian, Moroccan and Tunesian delegates to visit AAP, so they see what problems the sanctuary is facing with the trade in the species. All were impressed by the good work of AAP and hopefully more motivated to help stop this illegal trade.

CITES Conference of Parties 14

De CoP 14 van CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) is net achter de rug. Ik kan gerust zeggen dat het een groot succes was. We hebben hard gewerkt aan het opbouwen van een netwerk met de mensen die betrokken zijn bij de problematiek, uit verschillende landen. 171 landen waren bij elkaar en vergaderden en stemden 2 weken lang over allerlei voorstellen voor de bescherming van planten en dieren mbt de handel. De discussie over ivoor verkoop en olifanten had de overhand, maar vele andere plant en diersoorten hebben gelukkig ook aandacht gekregen en voor een aantal soorten, zoals de half-aap (genus Nycticebus- oa de Plompe Lori) is de conferentie positief geweest, aangezien ze vanaf nu betere internationale bescherming gaan krijgen tegen de handel. Ook andere zaken als de tijgerfarms, de overexploitatie van de paling, koralen, vissen en houtsoorten kwamen aan bod. Meer informatie kan je vinden op http://www.cites.org/

De berberaap had ook behandeld kunnen worden, als het voorstel op tijd was ingediend, maar daar hadden we dit keer niet voldoende tijd voor. We hebben echter wel bereikt dat mocht het de volgende keer nog nodig zijn (maw, als de illegale handel nog steeds niet onder controle is) dat zowel Marokko als Algerije, de 2 landen waar de berberaap nog voorkomt, het voorstel gaan indienen. Dat is echter pas over 3 jaar. Tot die tijd, hebben we de verschillende autoriteiten uitgedaagd, om te bewijzen dat een soort die op Appendix II staat van CITES, voldoende beschermd kan worden, en dat een zogenaamde "uplisting" naar Appendix I niet nodig is.

We zullen zien. We blijven positief. In ieder geval hebben we bereikt dat velen die op de conferentie aanwezig waren weten wat een berberaap is en wat de problemtiek inhoudt. We hebben op een van de laatste dagen een side-event georganiseerd waar heel veel mensen en belangrijke autoriteiten aanwezig waren. Daar hebben we een presentatie gegeven over de problematiek en over oplossingen gesproken.

We zijn over 3 jaar terug met of een succesverhaal, of een voorstel. We'll be back!

The CoP 14 of CITES (International Trade in Endangered Species) has just finished, and I can say it was a great success. We worked hard om setting up a network with people involved in the Barbary macaque issue. 171 countries were represented and they all talked an voted about different proposals on the trade in endangered plant and animal species. The discussion about ivory and elephants was quite dominant, but luckily other species have gotten the attendtion they deserved as well. The loris species, a pro simian (genus Nycticebus) have been uplisted to the Appendix I of CITES and hopefully they will be better protected now. The Barbary macaque could have been discussed through a proposal as well, but unfortunately we didn’t have enough timeto submit the proposal. But we have achieved that if in 3 years it is stillnecessary to uplist the Barbaray macaque (in other words if the illegal trade is still not controlled) that both Morocco and Algeria, the ranging states of the macaque, will submit the proposal. This is in 3 years. Until then, the management authorities of all involved countries have been challenged to show us that a species on Appendix II can be protected by this convention as well.

We shall see. We will remain positive. After this conference a lot of people know about the species and the problems and threats it is facing. We organised a side-event where a lot of authorities and people came to listen to our presentations and talk about solutions.

We’ll be back in 3 years, either with a success story or a proposal!

Spanje

Afgelopen week ben ik in Spanje geweest.Dat was erg nuttig. Ik heb samen met een Spaanse en een Deense collega besprekingen gehad met de mensen van de haven douane in Algeciras. Algeciras is de grootste haven als het gaat om handel van wilde dieren en ook de haven waar de meeste Europese Marokkanen passeren op hun vakantie naar Marokko in de zomer. We hebben besproken dat we daar deze zomer een grootschalig voorlichtingsproject gaan opzetten mbv folders die we gaan uitdelen aan de auto’s die de veerboot opgaan. De folder informeert de lezer over de illegaliteit en risico’s van het kopen en smokkelen van apen en andere wilde dieren, over de risico’s van het houden van apen in huis, en dat men geen foto’s moet maken met apen in Marrakech. Op de drukste dagen, die liggen in juli, zullen we er zelf gaan staan met Spaanse vrijwilligers. Ook worden er posters opgehangen.
Daarnaast hebben we de mogelijkheid besproken om een training te laten plaatsvinden van de Spaanse douane beambten. Op dit moment is er een tekort aan kennis van de CITES (Conventie in de handel van bedreigde dier en planten soorten) regelgeving en ook van het identificeren van diersoorten of ze bedreigd zijn of niet.
Het was een hele nuttige reis en de voorlichtingsactie gaat de komende tijd alle prioriteiten innemen.

Spain

Last week I have been to Spain. This was a very useful trip. I was there with a Spanish and a Danish colleague to talk with the customs of Algeciras harbour. Algeciras is the largest harbour in Spain when it comes to trade in animals and also the harbour where most European Moroccans cross over to Morocco in the summer dor their holidays. We talked about our plans to set up a large educational operation by means of handing out flyers to the passing cars before they board the ferry. These flyers will inform the reader about the illegality and risks of buying and smuggeling monkeys and other wild animals. Also it informs them of the risks of keeping primates as pets and that they should not take pictures with monkeys in Marrakech. On the most busy days, which are in July, we will be handing the flyers out personally with Spanish volunteers. We will also put up posters in the harbour.
We also talked about the possibility to set up a traing for the custom officers on CITES (The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) regulations and also for the identification of endangered species. At the moment there is lack of knowledge on this subject.
It was a very useful trip and we will put all our efforts in this in the next months.

Het bos, radioreportage en nieuwe apen

Ik ben afgelopen week in het bos geweest en dat was prachtig. Het heeft in April erg veel geregend in Marokko en het hele land is groen en vol met bloemen. Geweldig. En het geboorteseizoen is weer begonnen en de eerste jongen zijn geboren, nog geen week oud.
Ik was daar met een vriendin Sietske de Boer, die tevens journaliste is en zij heeft een radioreportage gemaakt. Sietske woont al jaren in Marokko.
Het was wat moeilijk om apengeluiden op de band te krijgen. Ik zal jullie op de hoogte houden van wanneer het uitgezonden wordt.
Wat leuk is om te vermelden is dat onze Marokkaanse collega’s hadden verteld dat er een eco museum wordt gebouwd in het cederbos, “ La Maison du Cedre” genaamd en de bouw is inmiddels begonnen. Ik ben daar erg blij om, dit zal goede voorlichting geven aan de bezoekers en het straalt ook professionaliteit uit voor het Nationale Park,

The forest, radio and new monkeys

Last week I was in the field and it was beautiful. It has rained a lot in April in Morocco and the whole country is green and full of flowers. This is good for the area with the hot summer to come. Also the birth season of the maxaques has started and I saw many new-borns, some not even a week old.
I was in the forest with my friend and journalist Sietske de Boer, who made a radio programme on the subject. Sietske has been living in Morocco for years.
It was not easy for her to get some good recordings of the monkey sounds however.
Also nice to tell you that our Moroccan colleagues informed us that they were planning on building an eco museum, called “ La Maison de Cedre”. I saw that they started building now and that is great news as this museum will provide a lot of education for visitors and also it enhances professionality for the National park.

Eekhoorns / Squirrels

Niet alleen berberapen komen jaarlijks binnen bij Stichting AAP, maar ook vele andere exotische zoogdieren zoals de Barbary squirrel. Nou reed ik afgelopen week naar het zuiden en werden me langs de weg een aantal eekhoorns te koop aangeboden. Dit is een soort die hier in Marokko in het wild voorkomt en net als de berberaap niet in een kooitje thuishoort! Ze werden voor een prikje te koop aangeboden en het blijkt maar weer dat de handel in wilde dieren in grotere omvang plaatsvindt dan we zouden willen.

Not only the Barbary macaque ends up at AAP on a yearly basis for shelter but many other exotic mammal species. Last week I was on my way to the south and two boys offered some Barbary squirrels for sale. This is a species that lives in the wild in Morocco and should not. like the Barbary macaque, end up in a cage. They were offered for a small amount of money and unfortunately this shows that the illegal trade in wild animal species is larger than we wish for!

Terug in Marokko

Ik ben weer terug in Marokko sinds een lange tijd. Het seminar dat we hebben georganiseerd in Maart heeft vele gemotiveerd om actie te ondernemen en vooral onze Spaanse collega's zijn in volle gang met het opzetten van een samenwering met de douane in Spanje. De komende tijd gaan we ons richten op de grote groep Marokkanen die in Europa wonen en massaal naar Marokko trekken voor de zomer. Dit is namelijk de grootste groep kopers van berberapen. Door middel van folders en billboards willen we hen op andere gedachten zetten. Daarom ga ik volgende week naar Spanje.

I am back in Morocco since a long time. The seminar that we organised in March has motivated many people to come into action and especially our Spanish colleagues are working hard to set up a coopertaion with the Spanish customs. The coming months we are going to focus on the education of the Moroccans living in Europe. This group is the largest group of buyers of Barbary macaques and by means of flyers and billboards we want to prevent them from buying wild animals. For this reason I am off to Spain next week.

Seminar achter de rug

Afgelopen week zijn 4 collega's op bezoek geweest in Nederland in het kader van ons project van IUCN en AAP. De eerste dag hebben we vooral recreatief gehouden en de tweede dag vond er een seminat plaats dat heette " The Barbary Macaque and Climate Change". Allerlei experts vanuit verschillende delen van de wereld hebben die dag gezamenlijk gepraat over de problemtaiek van de berberapen en het cederbos. Het probleem is complex en dat bleek ook. Het was een vruchtbare dag waarin verscheidene organisaties en individuen zich gecommiteerd hebben aan het project voor de toekomst. De Marokkaanse delegatie was tevreden met de steun die ze kregen.

De derde dag zijn we met de Marokaanse gasten naar Stichting AAP gegaan, om hen te laten zien hoe groot de problematiek is in Europa. ' s Middags zijn we naar de Oostervaardersplassen gegaan om een indruk te krijgen van een Nederlands Nationaal Park, waar we een rondleiding kregen van Staatbosbeheer.

Al met al denk ik dat dit bezoek erg succesvol was en er is veel werk aan de winkel! De Marokkanen zijn inmiddels weer richting het zuiden, ze vonden het klimaat hier toch minder aangenaam. Ze zijn denk ik in de koudste week van de winter gekomen.....

Last week we had the honour of a visit of four Moroccan colleagues for the project on the Barbary macaque. We organised an expert seminar called " The Barbary Macaque and Climate Change" and experts from all over the world were here to visit and share their knowledge. It was a real succesful day and there was a lot of comitment that followed from this seminar for the future.

The last day we took the Moroccan delegation to visit AAP, the sanctuary, to see with their own eyes the problem that we have in Europe. The afternoon we spent visiting a Ducth National Park, Oostervaardersplassen. To my opinion this visit was extremely important for our cooperation in the future. The Moroccan guests have gone back to Morocco, to their better climate......

CITES

We hebben het afgelopen jaar hard gewerkt aan het verplaatsen van de berberaap van een bepaalde lijst naar een beter beschermde lijst. Het gaat om CITES, de Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species. Dit verdrag reguleert de handel in bedreigde planten en dieren soorten. Wij hebben gepoogd om samen met de Marokkaanse overheid de berberaap op lijst I te krijgen, wat bepaalde consequenties heeft voor de handel in de berberaap, maar helaas was men te laat met het indienen van het voorstel, dus moeten we wachten op de volgende vergadering van CITES, en die is over 3 jaar. Maar we laten het hier niet bij zitten. We gaan alsnog op die vergadering bewustzijn creeren en lobbyen voor een betere handhaving.

I’m back in Holland. We are organising a seminar for experts on the barbary macaque trade and protection project and there will be a Moroccan (authorities) delegation coming over to join the seminar and to visit AAP, Sanctaury for exotic animals to see the problems with sheltering Barbary macaques with their own eyes. I came back to organise this visit and the seminar. I wasn’t happy at all as it was starting to become spring in Morocco, my favourite time of the year.

We have also been working on the amendment of the listing of the Barbary macaque within the CITES treaty (Convention Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species). This convention regulates the trade in endangered plant and animal species. We have tried, together with the Moroccan government to upgrade the Barbary macaque from list II to list I, what can have quite an important influence on the trade in the species. Unfortunately the submssion of the proposal was too late and we have to let it pass this year and wait 3 more years! But we will still attend the CITES meeting and lobby for better implementation of the treaty and the laws in Morocco.

Nederland en seminar

Ik ben weer eens in Nederland. Net een paar weken terug geweest en nu weer in het koude kikkerlandje. De reden hiervoor is dat wij een seminar organiseren over dit onderwerp en er komt een Marokkaanse delegatie naar Nederland om dat bij te wonen. Naast een seminar waarin we uitgebreid gaan praten over de berberapenproblematiek, klimaat en oplossingen, zal de Marokkaanse delegatie ook een bezoek brengen aan Stichting AAP om de resultaten van de illegale handel in "hun soort" met eigen ogen te zien.
Spannend en we hopen dat het goede dingen zal opleveren en ook wellicht vervolgfinanciering voor het project!

Het bos

Ik ben vorige week weer in het veld geweest. Het is voor mij altijd een genoegen om in de verte de prachtige grote cederbomen te zien staan als ik aan kom rijden en zodra ik mijn eerste groep apen zie, ben ik helemaal in mijn element.
Ik heb de oude bekende groepen weer gezien en het viel me op dat er erg weinig babies over waren. In de vijf groepen die ik gezien heb, telde ik zo'n 5 babies, en dat is erg weinig. Het kan een momentopname zijn geweest, maar later hoorde ik van de mensen die mij altijd informatie verschaffen in het bos, dat er dit jaar erg veel babies weg zijn gevangen en ze zijn allemaal verkocht.
Op dit moment wordt er niets meer gevangen, de handel ligt even stil.

Er lag geen sneeuw in het bos. Vorig jaar was dit wel het geval rond deze tijd. Het is echter wel erg koud en de apen hebben het wel zwaar met het vinden van voedsel. Ik waande me even in Gibraltar toen twee grote mannen op de auto sprongen op zoek naar voedsel!

Fijn een dagje douane

Ik was weer eens in het noorden om wat zaken met de auto te regelen en belandde tot mijn grote frustratie 3 uur bij de inspecteur van de douane, (grens tussen Marokko en de Spaanse enclave Ceuta) want er was een probleem. Ik zal jullie de details besparen van die dag, het was vreselijk, maar ik had even de tijd om de inspecteur eens aan de tand te voelen wat betreft smokkel van dieren de grens over. Ik vroeg hem of hij wel eens dieren tegenkwam die hier tijdens inspectie gevonden worden in auto’s of vrachtwagens. Zijn blik veranderde direct in een soort ontkenning en hij vertelde dat er nooit iets wordt gevonden, en dat alles via de grens bij Tanger gaat., want daar is een veterinaire dienst. Ik drong aan op de smokkel van dieren en zei dat ik zeker wist dat minstens een paar keer per week in ieder geval wel een reptiel de grens hier over zou gaan maar ook wel degelijk apen. Om hem wat gerust te stellen zei ik dat ik snapte dat het erg moeilijk was om gesmokkelde dieren te vinden, zeker reptielen. Ik vroeg wat ze deden als ze wel een dier vonden. Hij kon me daar geen antwoord op geven. Hij zei; er wordt hier nooit iets gevonden.

Eerlijk gezegd geloof ik hier helemaal niets van. Maar ik moet toegeven, de inspecties zijn ook bijzonder waardeloos aan de grens. Ik ben die dag 4 keer de grens gepasseerd; zowel aan de Spaanse als de Marokkaanse kant 4 keer heen en terug (vraag me niet waarom, dat is een lang verhaal!). Ik ben 1 keer gecontroleerd aan de Spaanse grens, en die controle hield in: in achterbak van auto een blik werpen en dat was alles. Ik had toevallig een wollen deken achterin de auto liggen, daar werd niet onder gekeken. Ik had makkelijk vele schildpadden, kameleons, etc etc mee kunnen smokkelen en zelfs een verdoofde aap als ik had gewild. Aan de Marokkaanse kant werd helemaal niet gecontroleerd.

Ik ga de komende tijd veel meer energie steken in het aankaarten van dit probleem bij de douane en een samenwerking op te zetten met het douanepersoneel.

A great day at the customs

The other day I was at the border between Morocco and Ceuta (a Spanish enclave in the north) to take care of some problems with the car. I will spare you the details but it turned out to be a horrible day, waiting at the border for 3 hours. It did give me time to discuss the matter of illegal smuggeling of animals with the inspector of the customs. The moment I touched the subject he became very evasive and denied that there was any illegal smuggeling of animals taking place at this border. He said that the trade took place in Tangier, which I denied. I told him I was convinced that there were many reptiles passing this border weekly and also even monkeys. To ease him a bit I said that I understood that it was hard to detect animals, especially reptiles. I asked him what they did with seized animals and he could not answer me, and again denied that there was any smuggeling of animals taking place.

To be honest, I do not believe him at all. I have to admit though, that considering the way the inspections of cars take place, I understand that nothing is ever found. That day I had to pass the borders (both Moroccan ans Spanish) 4 times (do not ask me why- long story!). I was checked once, at the Spanish border, and this inspection was no more than a quick look in the back of my car. I had a blanket in the back of my car and I could have easily smuggled trutles, cameleons etc accross the border, even a sedated monkey would have been a piece of cake. At the Moroccan border I was not inspected at all.

The coming months I want to focus more on making this problem better known at the Moroccan customs and hope we can start a cooperation with them.

Vorige week was ik in een nachtclub in Marrakech om een vriend van mij drums te zien spelen als aanvulling op de DJ. Het was echt een leuke avond en de sfeer was energiek. Naast een groepje mensen die drumden, waren er ook twee mannen die op een andere manier bijdroegen aan de exotische en Marokkaanse sfeer; dansend op de bar met ieder 1 tot 4 slangen rond hun nek en rondzwaaiend voor het publiek.

Ik moet toegeven, het was een mooie show, maar vanuit het oogpunt van dierenwelzijn is dat naar mijn mening onacceptabel. Slangen zijn extreem gevoelig voor bewegingen en trillingen. Kunt u zich voorstellen hoe het voelt om een slang te zijn in een discotheek? Ik heb ook het sterke vermoeden dat, net als bij de slangen op het Jmaa Fna plein in Marrakech, de voortanden verwijderd waren.
Naast dierenwelzijn aspecten geeft een dergelijke show naar mijn mening een totaal verkeerd signaal naar met name het Marokkaanse publiek, die toch vaak niet zo bekend of begripvol zijn met dierwelzijnsissues.. Het rondzwaaien van slangen in een discotheek zal zeker niet bijdragen aan het met meer respect beschouwen van dieren.

Last week I was in a nightclub in Marrakech, to see a friend of mine play drums together with the DJ. It was a very nice evening and the atmosphere was energetic and fun. Apart from a group of people playing drums to the beat of the DJ, there were also 2 men who added some entertainment to the music, which added to the exotic atmosphere and Moroccan vibes; two snake charmers, dancing on the bar with both 1 to 4 snakes wrapped around their neck and swinging them around for the crowd to see.

I have to admit, it makes a nice show, but considering animal welfare, this is to my opinion not acceptable. Snakes are extremely sensitive to movements and trembles. Can you imagine what it is like for a snake in a discotheque? And, although I cannot say this for sure, I think they also were not in the posession of their fangs anymore. Many snakes in Morocco that are used for entertainment, for example on the Jmaa Fna square in Marrakech, are removed of their fangs.
Apart from animal welfare issues, to my opinion this sort of entertainment sends a totally wrong message to the crowd, especially many Moroccan people who are not familiar with or supportive of animal welfare issues. Swinging around some snakes in a discotheque will surely not add to more respect for animals.

Van kruid tot schildpad

Gisteren liep ik door een oude wijk van Marrakech, waar veel kruidenzaakjes zitten, zogenaamde herboristes, die kruiden en andere zaken verkopen die oa als medicijnen worden gebruikt. Zo kan je er allerlei poeders krijgen voor ieder kwaaltje dat je kan bedenken. Ook verkopen deze winkels vaak dieren onderdelen die volgens de verkopers genezende werkingen hebben. Zowel de planten als dierprodukten zijn vaak van bedreigde soorten. In een van de zaken waar ik langsliep zaten ook levende dieren. Dit zie je vaker, en het zijn onder andere landschildpadden en hagedissoorten (Agamen). Populair zijn ook de schilden van schildpadden die fungeren als gitaartjes.
Gary Martin, de directeur van Global Diversity foundation is bezig met het samenstellen van een lijst met producten/ soorten die wel of niet verantwoord zijn om aan te schaffen. Zo kunnen toeristen verantwoorde souvenirs kopen. Deze lijst wordt hopelijk onder vele mensen verspreid want een reptiel de grens over smokkelen is nog makkelijker dan een aap, en het is een feit dat verschrikkelijk veel reptielen op deze manier jaarlijks Europa bereiken.

Verontrustende berichten

Zojuist kom ik van een bespreking met een Italiaanse primatoloog, Andrea Camperio Ciani, die al jaren onderzoek doet in het cederbos naar boskwaliteit en de apen. Hij was voor het eerst weer terug sinds een aantal jaren en vertelde me zijn bevindingen. Ten eerste vertelde hij dat de kwaliteit van het bos enorm hard achteruit is gegaan. Overvloedige houtkap en met name de geiten als oorzaak. Niks nieuws natuurlijk, maar hij heeft een aantal transecten gelopen die hij vast in zijn studie heeft en sommigen waren kompleet kaal geworden, bijna geen struik of boom meer over. Ook de tellingen van de apen waren weer een bevestiging dat het niet goed gaat met de populatie. Bovendien had een lid van zijn team een aantal mensen met geweren ontmoet in het bos die ronduit vertelden over hun jacht op de apen. Ditmaal niet alleen voor de handel, maar puur om de aantallen te verminderen; men is nog steeds van mening dat er te veel apen zijn. Voor mensen zoals Andrea en ik, is dit ontzettend frustrerend. Wij hebben kilometers in het bos gelopen en tellingen gedaan, uitvoerige analyses erop losgelaten en zonder pardon worden onze gegevens niet accepteerd en blijft het vooroordeel bestaan dat er te veel apen in het bos zijn. En hier moeten we tegen vechten.
Gelukkig zijn de grotere mannen die werkelijk iets te zeggen hier meer bereid te luisteren en dat deed ook Andrea goed om te horen. Het blijft echter lastig om een mentaliteitsverandering bij de rest tot stand te brengen.

Andrea en zijn team werken aan een project waarbij zij proberen samen te werken met herders, om alternatieven te vinden voor de geitenpopulatie die de meeste schade brengt. Volgens Andrea zijn de herders niet terughoudend en staan ze open voor alternatieven, zoals honingproductie en het houden en verkopen van kalkoenen, wat volgens Andrea voor de herders zelf veel lucratiever is en beter voor het bos. De herders verdienen zon 500 euro per jaar met het houden van geiten. Dat is natuurlijk erg weinig, gezien het feit dat ze bijna het gehele jaar door iedere dag hoeden.

Lange stilte

Ik realiseer me dat ik de laatste maanden veel minder nieuws op de blog zet dan voorheen. Dit heeft alles te maken met het type werk dat ik doe nu in vergelijking met vorig jaar. Vorig jaar was ik altijd in het veld en had ik volop verhalen over mijn ervaringen. Nu doe ik meer lobby werk en daar valt nou eenmaal minder interessants over te schrijven.

Ik ben in augustus en een deel van september in NL geweest en nu ben ik inmiddels al weer een paar weken terug in Marokko waar het overdag nog heerlijk warm is. Ik ben op dit moment in Rabat en heb morgen allerlei afspraken met organisaties hier. Onder andere Spana, een van de zeldzame dierwelzijnsorganisaties die zich met name inzetten voor het welzijn van werkdieren zoals ezels. Ze hebben over het hele land opvangcentra voor deze dieren en geven ook op grote schaal educatie aan kinderen. Ik wil graag bespreken met hen of er een mogelijkheid is om bij hun educatieproject aan te haken en het verhaal van de cederbossen en de berberapen te vertellen middels een film.

Ook heb ik onlangs het van Hall Instituut, opleiding Diermanagement in Leeuwarden in contact gebracht met Rabat Zoo. Rabat zoo kan een grote hulp zijn voor de opvang van inbeslaggenomen berberapen in Marokko, en dat willen zij ook graag. In principe vangen ze al wel apen op als het voorkomt. Echter de directeur had me aangegeven dat er een groot gebrek is in de zoo aan kennis van zaken zoals verrijking en kooi inrichting. Per 1 november begint de eerste stagiaire uit Nederland aan een opdracht voor verblijfinrichting in Rabat en dat doet me goed, dat er nu een samenwerking van start is gegaan om elkaar te helpen.

Morgen heb ik ook een gesprek met de dierecteur van de bosbouwdienst en hij zal me oa informeren over de ontwikkelingen in het cederbos. Ik hou jullie op de hoogte!

Het bos, de apen en water

Ik ben weer in het veld en het is heerlijk! Het is behoorlijk groen nog en vanmorgen ben ik om 7:30 het bos in gegaan en heb weer genoten van de apen en de omgeving. Ik heb met enkele fossiel verkopers gepraat en ze hebben me wat interessante informatie gegeven. Ten eerste blijkt dat er tot mei sneeuw heeft gelegen, de doorgangswegen zijn een tijdje afgesloten geweest en het is een zware winter geweest. Dat heeft volgens de heren hier tot gevolg dat er minder jongen zijn geboren. In een groep die vorig jaar zo’n 22 jongen telde, zijn dit jaar slechts rond de 8 jongen te vinden. Maar er zijn ook positieve kanten aan het verhaal, en dat is dat er meer water in het gebied is dit jaar als gevolg van de sneeuw, en dat is voor alle inwoners een welkome afwisseling van jaren van droogte. Niet dat alles nu nat is hoor, maar de waterbronnen hebben iets meer water te bieden en er is wat meer voedsel voor de apen, schapen en andere, al dan niet natuurlijke, bewoners.

Wat me positief verraste was dat er nu midden in het gebied borden zijn geplaatst. Het gebied wordt, zoals ik al eerder aangaf, Parc National d’ Ifrane genoemd. Ik ben hier heel blij mee, de borden geven het gebied een wat serieuzere status en er wordt volop beschreven hoe uniek het gebied is en hoe met het gebied om te gaan. Zo wordt ook gewaarschuwd voor het voeren van de apen…..helaas stond letterlijk 10 meter verderop een groep Marokkanen de apen te voeren….maar zoals ik al eerder schreef, dit betreft slechts 3 groepen in het hele gebied, en van deze groepen weten we zeker dat er geen apen weggevangen worden voor de handel….dat is bij andere groepen een heel ander verhaal.

Parc National d' Ifrane

Het cederbos ligt voor een groot deel in het nog altijd niet officiele Parc National d'Ifrane. Als men door het gebied rijdt is het moeilijk voor te stellen dat dit een Nationaal Park is, gezien het aantal mensen dat er woont en gebruikmaakt van de natuurlijke bronnen. De oorzaak hiervan heb ik in een eerdere blog beschreven.

Hier een stuk (mijn excuses dat het in het Engels is) waar men een globale beschrijving van het gebied geeft:

Extending over 53000 hectares, Ifrane NP is an excellent example of the unique geomorphological aspect of the Middle Atlas mountains. This region is composed of vegetation as well as landscape consisting of both open plateaus and densely forested lands, caracteristic of these mountains. Its beauty is enhanced by natural lakes, springs, rivers and caves.

In the center of the parc, one finds the largest continuous forest area in Morocco, made up principally of Atlas cedar, one of the most noblest tree species. In the past, the parc provided refuge for the most spectacular species of fauna such as the leopard, the lynx, and the otter. They have not been sighted for a long time.
The fauna today, is represented by 37 species of mammals, (the macaque being the most common), 142 species of bird and 33 species of reptiles and amphibians.

Het bijzondere blijft voor mij, dat de ene persoon zegt dat het gebied al een NP status heeft, en de ander mij vertelt dat er op dit moment onderzoek wordt gedaan op verschillende vlakken dat moet leiden tot een NP status. Het blijft mij onduidelijk. Wat ik wel weet, is dat het gebied zeker de status "Nationaal park" verdient en dat er vele maatregelen genomen dienen te worden om dit prachtige gebied met haar flora en fauna beter te beschermen.

Het heeft overigens de laatste weken veel geregend in het gebied en het is groener dan ooit, wat het bos een "sprookjes sfeer" geeft als je er doorheen wandelt.

Nationale Parken in Marokko

Marokko kent een aantal Nationale Parken, op dit moment 10, waarvan er 5 nog niet officieel een Nationaal Park status hebben. De parken zijn geografisch erg divers, wat Marokko zo'n interessant land maakt qua biodoversiteit. Zo liggen een aantal parken in het Noorden, in de Rif, een park is de hoogste berg van Noord Marokko (Parc National Toubkal, 4167 meter hoog), in kustgebieden, bossen en woestijngebieden (die helemaal in het zuiden van Marokko liggen, tegen de grens met Mauretanie).

Diersoorten die in deze parken voorkomen zijn oa de otter, dorca gazelle, dam gazelle, het berberschaap, het jachtluipaard, de lynx, de fennec vos (ook populair voor huisdierenhandel!), de hyena, bedreigde roofvogels, de monniks rob, vele unieke reptielensoorten en natuurlijk de berberaap.

De ernstig bedreigde soorten zijn de panter, de monniksrob, het jachtluipaard en de bald ibis.

De inmiddels verdwenen soorten in Marokko zijn de serval, de leptocere gazelle, de addax, de oryx, de atlas leeuw, en een struisvogelsoort.

Om de fauna van Marokko te herstellen heeft Eaux et Forets, het ministerie van bosbouw een aantal reintroductieprogramma's ingevoerd, of zijn in de planning. Soorten waar dit voor geldt zijn de oryx, de addax, dama gazelle, en de struisvogel.

Laten we hopen dat een dergelijk initiatief niet noodzakelijk is voor de berberaap in de toekomst! Reintroductieprojecten zijn erg kostbare initiatieven en bepaald niet altijd succesvol. Vaak is de oorzaak van het verdwijnen van de soort nog altijd aanwezig. Het is beter te voorkomen dan te genezen.

Media en hitte

Nou, ik heb al weer een tijdje niks geschreven. In de tussentijd heb ik met wat tegenslagen te kampen gehad, onder andere een auto ongeluk, waar ik nogal veel tijd mee kwijt ben geweest. Ik ben in orde, maar de auto was een minder vrolijk verhaal en het regelen van slepen en reparatie in Marokko is niet bepaald prettig en makkelijk om te regelen. Zeker als je een blonde meid bent die niet heel erg goed Arabisch spreekt en men je ziet als een wandelende onbenul met veel geld.... Maar goed, het komt in orde.

Ons project is de afgelopen tijd behoorlijk in de media geweest. Het NOS journaal en een ochtendprogramma van RTL4 hebben aandacht geschonken aan ons project. Ook zal vanuit Marokko aandacht worden besteed in de Nederlandse media. Op 26 Juli zal in de column van Kees Beekmans (wonend in Rabat) van de Volkskrant een stuk komen over ons project. Kees schrijft iedere week op woensdag een column over allerlei aspecten van zijn leven en bevindingen in Marokko.

Ook ben ik weer naar Rabat geweest, waar ik weer met verschillende organisaties heb gepraat, oa de directeur van Rabat Zoo, die bereid zijn om samen te werken in de opvang van Berberapen zodra hopelijk spoedig de douaniers meer dieren in beslag gaan nemen. Daarover later meer.

Het is hier vreselijk heet. Afgelopen week steeg de temperatuur tot 52 graden in Marrakech. Dat is echt niet uit te houden kan ik jullie vertellen!

Rabat

Ik ben afgelopen week in Rabat geweest, en heb een gesprek gehad met oa de directeur van de Bosbouwdienst hier. Hij is een belangrijk persoon in het bereiken van ons doel en het was een goed gesprek. Het viel me op dat de mensen hier erg open staan voor advies en input van buitenaf.

Een van de grootste problemen is het feit dat de beschermde gebieden hier nooit volledig beschermd kunnen worden omdat in de wet staat dat de lokale bevolking altijd recht heeft op het gebruiken van natuurlijke bronnen van het land. Dat betekent dat als je de begrazingsdruk in het gebied wilt verminderen, je andere manieren moet zoeken. Op dit moment geeft de bosbouwdienst subsidies aan de lokale herders verenigingen om de druk op het gebied wat te verkleinen en om de lokale mensen zelf een rol te laten spelen in de bescherming van het gebied.

Binnenkort zal ik een presentatie geven aan mensen van verschillende organisaties en instanties, onder andere het ministerie voor natuurbescherming. Na de presentatie zal een discussie volgen waarin hopelijk ook acties worden besloten. Ik hou jullie op de hoogte.

Verder is het in Marokko op het moment even niet al te warm. Het is al dagen bewolkt en bijna fris te noemen!

Klimaatverandering Marokko

De gevolgen van klimaatverandering in Marokko zijn al sinds de jaren '60 merkbaar.
De woestijn rukt op naar het noorden, het bosoppervlakte neemt af, langere periodes van droogte en soms hevige overstromingen. Eergisteren nog kreeg ik een telefoontje van een kennis die een hotel in de woestijn runt (Merzouga) en hij meldde dat overstromingen als gevolg van hevige regenval een aantal omliggende hotels zo ongeveer heeft weggevaagd.

De opwarming van de aarde is een lange termijn probleem voor Marokko. Volgens de Moroccan Network for the Environment and Sustained Development wordt verwacht dat de beschikbaarheid van water 10-15% zal afnemen in de komende 15 jaar.

Marokko zelf heeft niet erg veel indutrie en draagt maar deels bij aan de vervuiling van de aarde. Interessant is dat de Mahgreb landen (Marokko, Algerije en Tunesie)jaarlijks slechts een zesde van de gassen uitstoot in vergelijking met landen als de Verenigde Staten en Canada.

Klimaatverandering is een proces dat men op grote schaal moet aanpakken wereldwijd.
Wat betreft het cederbosgebied, waar woestijnvorming en droogte ook merkbaar is, ligt er een belangrijke taak om de directe menselijke invloeden die de woestijnvorming versnellen (ontbossing/ begrazing) een halt toe te roepen.

Climate changes have started to be more and more apparent in Morocco at large since the 1960s.These problems include ever-expanding encroachment by the desert, dwindling water resources, shrinking forests, recurrent drought and sometimes disastrous floods. Only yesterday I received a phone call from a friend that runs a hotel in the desert (Merzouga) and he told me some hotels in the area have been washed away by floods caused by heavy rainfall.

Global warming looks to be a long-term concern for Morocco. According to the Moroccan Network for the Environment and Sustained Development, water resources are expected to decline by 10 to 15 percent in the coming 15 years.

Marokko does not have heavy industry and is not a major polluter. As a group, the three Maghreb countries (Morocco, Algeria and Tunesia) emit annually only about a sixth of the gases of the major industrialized countries such as the United States and Canada.

Climate change is a process that should be attacked on a large global scale. Looking at the cedar forest area, where desertification and draught is apparent, there lies an important task to stop the human caused influences of desertification (logging and livestock grazing)in this region.

Marrakech & presentatie

Sinds een week heb ik de sleutel van mijn heuse eigen appartement in Marrakech. Ik ben hier bijzonder blij mee want ik heb al een lange tijd geen eigen plek gehad om te wonen. Ik deel op dit moment het appartement met een Pakistaans- Slovenisch meisje die hier onderzoek doet naar de kennis van planten bij de kinderen op school in Marrakech.
Vanmorgen heb ik een presentatie gegeven over de berberapen problematiek aan studenten en professoren van Uppsala Universiteit in Zweden, mensen van de Natural History Museum, van Global Diversity Foundation en ik had iemand van de lokale bosbouwdienst uitgenodigd. De laatste bleek een erg plezierig persoon en ze was erg geinteresseerd in mijn werk. Weer een stapje verder. Weer een ingang. Het is niet makkelijk om hier ingangen te vinden bij de juiste mensen.

Interessant was een discussie die ontstond over de waarde van de apen op het Jama Fnaa plein in Marrakech (zie filmpje). Men ziet de aanwezigheid van deze apen als een soort cultuurhistorisch aspect van Marrakech en het verdwijnen ervan zou een zonde zijn, net als de slangenbezweerders. Met een dergelijke mentaliteit is het toch moeilijk te bevechten! Ook sympathiseerden sommige Marokkanen met het feit dat een aap het equivalent van een maansalaris opbrengt. Op die manier zou het bijna kwalijk zijn deze mensen van een dergelijk hoog inkomen te beroven. Begrijpelijk, maar met een dergelijk instelling zou men bijvoorbeeld ook de handel in drugs of andere kwalijke zaken kunnen goedkeuren.

Er valt een hoop te doen aan mentaliteitsverandering, dat is duidelijk!

Samenwerking

Ik ben de afgelopen weken ook op bezoek geweest bij een aantal actieve NGO’s in Marokko en het ziet er naar uit dat we een goede samenwerking kunnen opbouwen. Op dit moment ben ik vooral bezig met het opbouwen van contacten en het orienteren naar de mogelijkheden binnen ons project. Zo ziet het er naar uit dat ik veel ga samenwerken met een organisatie die in Marrakech is gesitueerd, namelijk Global Diversity Foundation, die samenwerkt met de Natural History Museum in Marrakech. Zij zijn bezig een grootschalig voorlichtingsproject op te zetten voor toeristen mbt het aanschaffen van beschermde planten en dierensoorten, oa dus ook de berberaap. Ik zal dat deel voor mijn rekening nemen en op 22 mei geef ik aan een groep betrokkenen een presentatie mbt de berberapenproblematiek.
Zo ben ik inmiddels al lekker bezig en hopelijk komen er in de nabije toekomst vele projecten bij die bijdragen aan de bescherming van de berberaap en haar habitat in Marokko!

Koninklijke contacten

Ik heb in de afgelopen periode goed contact opgebouwd met de nicht van Koning Mohamed VI. Ik heb een aantal dagen met haar opgetrokken. Ze woont zelf meestal niet in Marokko maar is er nu voor wat langere periode. Naast het feit dat ze erg plezierig is om als kennis te hebben, kan zij mij misschien ook helpen om een aantal zaken voor mijn project voor elkaar te krijgen. Apen

Inmiddels ben ik weer 3 weken in Marokko geweest. Hoewel ik nog niet in het cederbos gebied ben geweest heb ik op andere plaatsen waar Berberapen leven wel al de eerste jongen gezien van 2006. Ze zijn nog erg klein, waarschijnlijk pas een week of 2 a 3 oud.

Het was overvol in Marrakech de afgelopen weken met toeristen, aangezien het Spaanse en Marokkaanse vakantietijd was. Het resulteerde in overvolle hotels en mensen die in hun auto sliepen om te overnachten! Goede zaken voor de twee apenhandelaren op het Jma Fnaa plein in Marrakech! Zij bieden op dit moment Berberapen te koop aan die vorig jaar zijn geboren. Ik heb nog geen hele jonge dieren gezien.

Ook kreeg ik verontrustende berichten van toeristen in Marrakech dat hen langs de snelweg in de omgeving van Rabat en Casablanca apen te koop waren aangeboden. Er stond doodgewoon een handelaar met twee apen omhooggehouden ze te koop aan te bieden bij de oprit. Dit heb ik nog nooit eerder gehoord en ik maak me zorgen over de gevolgen van zulke praktijken. Uiteraard zal ik deze zaken proberen aan te kaarten bij de autoriteiten in Marokko.

Perikelen!

Nou, inmiddels ben ik al weer een week in Marokko. Het was me het reisje wel weer. Ik vloog naar Malaga, ten eerste al met een vlucht die 1.5 uur langer duurde want de luchtverkeersleiders staakten in Frankrijk, dus moesten we via Italie vliegen. In Malaga ben ik bij mijn IUCN collega's langsgegaan om me voor te stellen en wat zaken door te spreken.

Toen was het tijd om met de pont naar Ceuta te gaan en de auto op te zoeken, die ik daar 3 maanden had geparkeerd. Ik nam een taxi naar de plek waar ik hem had neergezet, en hij was weg. Ik kreeg het erg benauwd en was bang dat de auto gestolen was. Dat dachten de politieagenten ook waar ik later op kantoor terechtkwam. De auto stond niet in een loods ergens nadat hij was weggesleept. We zagen het somber in. Ik zal jullie de details besparen maar uiteindelijk heb ik samen met een agent per toeval de auto weer teruggevonden op een andere plek. Er zat een briefje onder de ruitenwissers waarin stond dat men de auto had verplaatst ivm carnaval. Niet te geloven! De auto startte meteen en alle spullen lagen er nog in. Volgens de agent een wonder!

Ik wilde meteen Marokko in, want ik heb Ceuta inmiddels wel gezien, maar ook daar weer problemen bij de douane, want de papieren waren niet juist. Uiteindelijk toch weer een nacht in Ceuta geslapen en de volgende dag Marokko in. Habdullilah zouden ze hier zeggen! (God zij dank!)

Terug naar Marokko

Na een tijdje stilte van mijn kant weer wat nieuws. Zoals een collega in Marokko laatst zei, ben ik de afgelopen maanden "in winterslaap geweest met mijn onderzoeksgegevens". Ik heb me bezig gehouden met de analyses van mijn onderzoek en een rapportage daarvan. Daarnaast ben ik druk geweest in samenwerking met Stichting AAP om wat beleidsmatige veranderingen te bewerkstelligen wat betreft de status van de Berberaap op de internationale beschermingslijsten. Hopelijk werpt dit in de toekomst haar vruchten af en worden de Berberapen beter beschermd.

In februari ben ik een aantal dagen naar een bijeenkomst geweest van het Nederlandse Marokko Fonds, waar ik wat mensen heb leren kennen die in Marokko voor natuurbeschermingsorganisaties werken. Dat bleek erg nuttig.

Per 1 april ga ik weer terug naar Marokko om voor IUCN Nederland het klimaatproject uit te voeren, zoals beschreven op de website. Ik hou jullie op de hoogte van de ontwikkelingen, ik ben nu druk met het voorbereiden op mijn vertrek. Ik hoorde dat de lente daar weer is begonnen....dat is al beter dan hier in ons koude kikkerlandje!

Terug in NL

December was mijn laatste veldwerk afgerond en heb ik besloten om een tijdje naar Nederland te gaan omdat ik nu druk aan de slag moet met de analyses van mijn onderzoek. Ik had hier wat hulp bij nodig en die hulp kon ik in Marokko niet vinden. Dus heb ik nog even alle groepen apen opgezocht.
Vlak voor kerst ben ik naar het noorden van Marokko gereden, want ik moest het land verlaten met de auto ivm de papieren. Daar zou ik de pont naar Spanje nemen en vanuit Spanje naar Nederland vliegen. Het weer was echter zo slecht dat er geen pont bleek te varen!! Ik heb er uiteindelijk 4 dagen over gedaan om in Nederland te komen. Nadat ik 2 keer mijn vlucht had gemist ben ik terug Marokko in gegaan, en ben ik met een groep Mekka pelgrims vanaf Tanger naar Malaga gevlogen, en heb daar een nacht op het vliegveld tussen deze pelgrims doorgebracht. Nou, dat was een ervaring kan ik zeggen!! Het is me uiteindelijk gelukt om voor de kerst in Nederland aan te komen en inmiddels zit ik tot over mijn oren in de statistiek.

Voorlopig blijf ik even in Nederland en het ziet er naar uit dat ik over een niet al te lange tijd weer in Marokko zit. Hierover later meer. Eerst maar eens de resultaten van mijn onderzoek publiceren en bijkomen van die 8 ongelofelijk bijzondere maanden tussen de Berbers!!

Laatste maand in het veld

Het veldwerk in december was nog eens andere koek! Daar waar ik in juli nog dacht dat ik door de hitte bevangen zou raken, liep ik deze periode door sneeuw en wind. Het werd na een tijdje zelfs gevaarlijk om door het bos te lopen, want het was glad en de sneeuw bedekte de rotsen, waardoor je niet zag waar je je voeten neerzette. De valpartijen hebben vele hilarische momenten opgeleverd. Om de beurt lag een van ons in de sneeuw. Het was ook behoorlijk zwaar, aangezien je tot zo'n 20 cm in de sneeuw zakte.

Ik vond het echter geweldig en het was prachtig om de apen in de sneeuw te zien. Zij zijn daar toch veel beter aan gewend dan wij! Ook was het leuk als we sporen van apen tegenkwamen, want dan konden we de sporen volgen in de sneeuw en vonden we de groepen makkelijker.

De meeste Berber mensen zijn uit het gebied weg nu, op enkele doorzetters na, die nog altijd in het bos hun kuddes schapen en geiten hoeden. Dat moet toch een vreselijk zwaar bestaan zijn! Ik kon na een dag veldwerk een warme douche nemen.....zij gaan terug naar hun tenten. Ongelofelijk.

Na een tijdje ging het op sommige plekken dooien en hebben we gelukkig de groepen apen weer teruggevonden die we kwijt waren. Ze maakten het prima.

Apen kwijt

Er zijn een aantal plekken in het bos waar men, zoals ik al eerder vertelde, fossielen ed verkopen. Bij deze plekken leven ook groepen apen, die nogal aan mensen gewend zijn en die gevoerd worden en beschermd door de verkopers.

Ik ben sinds de start van mijn onderzoek nog nooit langs deze plekken gereden zonder apen te zien. Maar sinds er sneeuw ligt, zijn ze weg. Ik heb de afgelopen week wat mensen / vrienden naar die plekken gestuurd omdat ik kon garanderen dat daar apen te vinden waren, maar allen kwamen ze teleurgesteld terug. Ik vind het heel vreemd en kan niet verklaren waarom deze groepen in juist zo’n zwaar seizoen er voor kiezen om niet rond deze relatief veilige plekken te blijven (veilig in het kader van voedselvoorziening). Uiteraard zijn er in dit seizoen minder toeristen, maar de lokale mensen blijven bij hun stalletjes en blijven de apen voeren. Wellicht dat ik er nog achter kom waarom ze verdwenen zijn……laten we hopen dat ze elders een betere plek hebben om te overwinteren…….!

Sneeuwstorm

Gisteren gingen Karim en ik op pad, het bos in. Het was nogal mistig en er lagen overal stukken sneeuw, maar dat weerhield ons niet. De eerste uren waren prima, wat koud als we op open stukken liepen, maar wel te doen. Het laatste deel lag in een gebied waar geskied wordt, en nu weten we waarom. Het begon nogal hard te sneeuwen toen we halverwege ons transect waren, en uiteindelijk liepen we regelrecht tegen een sneeuwstorm in. Ik had 5 lagen kleren aan en een lange onderbroek. Iets wat ik nog nooit in mijn leven heb gedragen, maar toch wel blij mee was. Helaas na een tijdje was alles doorweekt, en toen we eenmaal bij de auto aankwamen had ik een laag van 3 cm sneeuw op mijn kleren. Mijn gezicht was vuurrood en de kachel in de auto voldeed niet. Ik heb werkelijk zelden zulk weer meegemaakt en natuurlijk hebben we geen apen gezien. Wel werden we langs de weg gepasseerd door een aantal auto’s en de mensen zullen wel gedacht hebben dat we gek waren.

Vandaag werden we wakker en keken naar buiten en hadden al een vermoeden dat het niets zou worden. We hebben een poging gedaan het bos in te rijden maar we slipten bijna van de weg af. Het was werkelijk adembenemend in het veld, zo mooi met de grote cederbomen gehuld in een laag sneeuw, maar we konden niet in ons werkgebied komen. Heel gefrustreerd hebben we een dag moeten toekijken en afwachten. We hebben wel een aantal groepen apen gezien en die maakten het prima. Ze waren onder rotsen aan het zoeken naar voedsel en ze leken weinig last te hebben van de sneeuw. Ook de jonge dieren sprongen en speelden er op los in de sneeuw. We hopen nu maar dat morgen zon brengt en dat de sneeuw een beetje smelt, zodat we het bos weer in kunnen. Zo niet dan gaan we op zoek naar sneeuwkettingen, maar of Marokko daar ooit van gehoord heeft betwijfel ik.

Back in the field

Ik ben weer in het veld en het is een bijzonder tafereel. Binnen 2 dagen is het weer geheel omgeslagen en heb ik eerder sneeuw mogen zien dan jullie in Holland. Het bos en de bergen liggen nu onder een laag sneeuw en het is KOUD!! Het is werkelijk prachtig, maar wel zwaar. Ik vind het bijzonder om in dit gebied twee uitersten mee te maken; daar waar ik in de zomermaanden klaagde over 45 graden celsius, loop ik nu in de sneeuw en ben ik tot op het bot toe koud. Mijn ouders, die bij mij op bezoek waren, gingen een dagje met me mee het veld in en ik had hen niet voorbereid op deze kou, daar ik zelf dacht dat het pas volgende maand zou gaan sneeuwen.
Het probleem in Marokko is dat men hier veel meer buiten leeft, en je dus veel meer wordt blootgesteld aan de weersomstandigheden hier. Bovendien hebben mensen hier geen verwarming en zijn de huizen gebouwd om de hitte buiten te houden…..en de kou binnen….!
De berbermensen die in dit gebied leven met hun kuddes schapen en geiten gaan bij de eerste sneeuwval terug naar hun dorpen, dus mijn vrienden zullen er niet meer zijn, jammer, een lekker warm kopje thee aan het eind van een transect was niet verkeerd geweest.

De apen maken het goed. De jongen die afgelopen geboorteseizoen zijn geboren zijn groot en sterk genoeg om te overleven in de winter en er zijn gelukkig nog aardig wat jongen te zien. Het is nu eikelseizoen en dat betekent voorlopig voldoende voedsel voor de dieren. Ook hebben ze gelukkig een enorm dik pak haar op hun lijf, en zullen ze, ondanks dat het zwaar zal zijn, de winter wel doorkomen. Nu ik nog….!!!

Spanje

Inmiddels ben ik naar Spanje op en neer geweest, om de auto om te ruilen. Alle autoriteiten hadden me verteld dat ik met een nieuwe auto weer 6 maanden het land in mocht. Helaas bleek bij de douane niets minder waar en zat ik behoorlijk in de problemen. Mijn collega Jack, van Primadomus, die zo aardig was geweest om de auto met me te ruilen vanuit Spanje was gelukkig bij me, en hij kon in het Spaans een oplossing bespreken met de hoogste baas van de douane. De oplossing is niet geheel zoals we gehoopt hadden, maar ik rij nu rond in een andere auto, ditmaal met Spaans kenteken en dat levert hilarische momenten op als de Marokkanen in het Spaans tegen me beginnen te praten en ik geen idee heb wat zij zeggen. Het is dan lastig uitleggen dat ik Hollands ben, en dat doe ik dan ook maar niet….

Bezoek collega’s AAP

Begin oktober kwamen twee goede vrienden en tevens collega’s van Stichting AAP langs voor 10 dagen. Eigenlijk was het vakantie, maar we hebben uiteraard wel wat apenzaken besproken en bekeken, dat kan niet anders. Een bijzondere ervaring was het initieren van een in beslagname van een jonge berberaap. We waren in Fes, een prachtige stad ten Noorden van het Midden Atlas gebergte. Ik kon me herinneren dat tijdens mijn onderzoek in 2004 er een familie was die een jonge aap te koop aanbood. We kwamen langs diezelfde locatie en ik zei, kom laten we eens kijken of er weer een aap zit. En ja hoor, dat bleek het geval.
Wij vonden dat het eens tijd werd dat iemand iets deed om deze handelaren te stoppen.
De eerste stap was de politie, maar die zagen de ernst van de zaak niet in, sterker nog, zij zagen de illegale handel in drugs in Marokko ook niet als iets waar men zich druk om moest maken. We zijn die dag op een aantal verschillende kantoren beland en de hogere autoriteiten namen onze zaak erg serieus en dat resulteerde in een snelle inbeslagname van deze jonge berberaap. Wij mochten daarbij aanwezig zijn, en alles verliep rustig. De eigenaar was nogal verontwaardigd en claimde dat hij de aap niet voor de verkoop had, maar wij hebben de man er vriendelijk op geattendeerd dat het houden van apen ook illegaal is.

De lokale bosbouwautoriteiten hebben de verdere afhandeling gedaan en de aap meegenomen, vermoedelijk terug naar het bos. Dit is een situatie die niet erg wenselijk is, en wij hebben geprobeerd daar een rol in te spelen, maar onze bemoeienis werd tot dit punt getolereerd en daar waren we al erg tevreden mee uiteraard. We hebben de aap wat fruit gegeven en hebben haar achter moeten laten.

Uit dit geval blijkt dat de autoriteiten in Marokko wel degelijk actie willen ondernemen, maar dat er ten eerste weinig initiatie is vanuit de politie en bovendien is er geen opvangcentrum in Marokko waar de in beslag genomen apen heen kunnen.

Naar mijn idee heeft het initieren van deze actie een heleboel mensen wakker geschud en heeft ook een aantal goede contacten opgeleverd in deze streek.

Politie

Op de terugweg naar Ouzoud werden we aangehouden door de politie, want een koplamp deed het niet goed. Karim ging de auto uit en begon een fel gesprek.. Vervolgens komt hij naar me toe en droeg me op 100 Dirham (ongeveer 10 euro) omkoopgeld te geven. Hij duldde geen discussie. De politie vroeg om 400 dirham en nam geen genoegen met 100. Nou, inmiddels heb ik de nodige ervaring met de politie hier en weet ik dat je je niet op de kop moet laten zitten want ze willen alleen maar wat extra centen verdienen, en het heeft vaak niets met de wet te maken, sterker nog, het is illegaal wat ze doen.

Ik besloot uit te stappen en me er mee te bemoeien. Ik zei op een vriendelijke maar serieuze toon dat ik in een auto reed die 100 keer milieuvriendelijker en beter onderhouden is dan 99% van de auto’s die rondrijden in Marokko, en dat mijn koplamp het wel deed, maar misschien niet helemaal zoals het hoort. Vervolgens ben ik langs de weg gaan staan, en heb ik auto’s en vrachtwagens aangewezen die veel meer mankeerden dan mijn auto. Karim draalde gespannen om me heen. Ik zweeg en stond naast de agent alsof ik tot kerstmis de tijd had om dit te regelen. Ongelofelijk, maar na 10 minuten kreeg ik en mijn geld terug en wenste de agent me een goede avond en of ik wel zo snel mogelijk mijn lamp wilde laten maken.
Trots stapte Karim naast me in de auto en zei “ jij bent geen Hollander, jij bent inmiddels Marokkaanse geworden…” .

Koningklijk jachtgebied

Zoals ik al eerder schreef levert het lopen van willekeurige transecten leuke verrassingen op. Karim en ik liepen afgelopen week door een gebied dat we niet kenden, tot we bij een hek kwamen. Volgens Karim was dat een probleem, en konden we niet verder. Dat is iets wat ik eerder heb ervaren in Marokko, men is niet kordaat om bij een struikelblok een oplossing te zoeken. Men geeft gewoon op. Maar zo zit ik niet in elkaar en dus zei ik, de oplossing is simpel, we klimmen gewoon over het hek heen (het hek was 2 meter, maar behoorlijk beklimbaar naar mijn mening). Ik heb me rot gelachen. Marokkanen zijn blijkbaar niet gewend dat vrouwen dit soort dingen doen en ook nog kunnen, dus zei hij met een bezorgde blik “ voor mij is het geen probleem, maar voor jou wordt het wel moeilijk…” . Nou, dat laat ik me geen twee keer zeggen! Binnen en minuut stonden we aan de andere kant van het hek en konden we ons transect vervolgen…. Karim zweeg. Ik zou wel eens willen weten wat hij dacht.

Enfin, we lopen verder en ineens stopt Karim, want hij zag een prachtig hert met een enorm gewei. Even verder zagen we er meer en een enorme groep apen. Ik had het vermoeden dat dit een afgezet gebied was voor de herten, maar begreep niet helemaal waarom. Later, nadat we borden zagen waarop stond dat we niet verder mochten, wat we natuurlijk wel deden (alles voor de goede zaak zeg ik maar…) bleek dit het jachtgebied van Koning Mohammed 6 te zijn. We kwamen allerlei schietplatforms en dierenbehuizing tegen. Ik grapte nog dat we misschien wel eens een leeuw konden tegenkomen….en later vertelde iemand ons dat er inderdaad ook in het bos verstopt een gebied is waar de koning tijgers en leeuwen heeft. Waarvoor precies is me niet duidelijk. Later dacht ik, misschien was de terughoudendheid van Karim zo gek nog niet en waren zijn gedachten over die gekke blonde uit Holland toch wel terecht….!
Ik vond het weer een leuke ervaring.

Zonsverduistering en rammadan

Vanmorgen toen ik naar het huis van Karim reed om hem op te halen was het stil rond zijn huis, de deuren zaten dicht en ik dacht dat hij zich misschien verslapen had. Dit bleek een andere reden te hebben. Er zou tussen 7 uur en 11 uur ‘s ochtends een zonsverduistering in Marokko waar te nemen zijn. Op de radio had men gezegd dat iedereen binnen moest blijven en vooral de kinderen moest weerhouden er naar te kijken. Ook werd iedereen opgeroepen om te bidden. Blijkbaar heeft een dergelijk natuurlijk verschijnsel een belangrijke betekenis in de Islam en dat had ik mij niet gerealiseerd. Karim vond het geen probleem het huis te verlaten en we zijn na een glaasje muntthee op weg gegaan en hebben vanuit de auto wat van de verduistering kunnen volgen, maar hij was al op zijn retour, dus de echte eclips hebben we gemist. Het was heerlijk rustig op de weg en we hebben de 400 kilometer in vlot tempo kunnen rijden!

Morgen of overmorgen begint de rammadan, de vastenmaand voor de Islam. De precieze datum kan aan de hand van de maan worden vastgesteld en vanavond weten we meer. De gedachte achter de rammadan is dat men moet leren voelen hoe het is om zonder eten en drinken te leven en om te delen met de minder gestelde mensen. Van zonsopgang tot zonsondergang mogen de moslims niet eten en drinken en er zijn nog vele andere regels.

Ik heb besloten solidair te zijn met mijn vrienden en als ik in Ouzoud ben mee te doen aan de rammadan, zolang ik het volhoud. In het veld echter vind ik het te zwaar, en heb ik echt water en eten nodig om de vele kilometers lopen vol te houden. Voor Karim zal het zwaar worden en ik zal ook proberen hem zo min mogelijk te belasten in deze maand. Iedereen zegt dat het een erg leuke tijd is en heel bijzonder om mee te maken, vooral ’s avonds als er weer volop gegeten en gedronken mag worden en het sociale aspect van belang is. Hier in Marokko komen ze allemaal samen om te eten en muziek te maken. Ik ben benieuwd!

Hoe gaat het met de apen

Ik ben al vrij spoedig weer het veld in gegaan om mijn september gegevens te verzamelen. Het eerste wat opviel was dat de babies nu echt al gegroeid zijn en erg zelfstandig. Ook begint het paarseizoen van de berberaap nu en dat is te zien en te horen!! De vrouwen hebben de meest bizarre zwellingen en de geluiden van een paring zijn regelmatig waar te nemen. Ik vind het erg bijzonder dat ik de hele cyclus heb meegemaakt dit jaar, van geboorteseizoen tot paarseizoen, en dat ik de jongen heb zien groter worden. Het is nog niet helemaal duidelijk of het aantal jongen daadwerkelijk enorm is afgenomen in de laatste 2 maanden vanwege de handel, daar ik nog midden in mijn veldwerk zit.

Methodiek aangepast en wild zwijn

Na mijn bezoek aan Engeland bleek dat ik mijn methodiek een beetje aan moest passen. Ik loop nog altijd dezelfde 4 transecten, maar nu 2 maal per maand en de andere dagen doe ik nu willekeurige transecten in andere gebieden om een beter beeld van de populatie te krijgen. Het leuke is dat ik hierdoor veel meer van het gebied leer kennen en op plaatsen kom die me telkens weer verrassen. Vandaag kwamen we op een uitkijkpunt uit, werkelijk prachtig (zie foto).

Vorige week gebeurde iets heel toevalligs. Ik had de dag voordat ik het veld in ging tegen een vriend gezegd dat ik graag een keer een wild zwijn wilde zien, aangezien ik altijd veel sporen zie maar nog nooit een levende. Zijn reactie was, kijk maar uit, ze zijn erg gevaarlijk en erg groot……. De volgende middag was ik weer in het veld en ik zag iets groots 100 meter langs de weg liggen. We stopten en zagen dat het een wild zwijn was, maar helaas overleden (zie foto). Ze was waarschijnlijk door een vrachtwagen aangereden en een stuk van de weg gekropen om te sterven. Vol bewondering zag ik hoe groot deze dieren zijn en inderdaad, ik geloof dat ik ze niet graag in levende lijve tegenkom. Ik vond het wel erg spijtig dat dit dier zo aan haar eind was gekomen.
